Today 20th of June the day the "sun stands still"! This idea comes from the latin name for this day is "Solstitum" which literally means this. In Norwegian we say "Sommersolverv", the day we say the sun turns. On this day the sun can be seen higher in the sky at midday than any other day of the year. On this day you can see the midnight sun north of the arctic circle (latitude 66,5 north). This is a lovely day for a late night stroll to keep exploring this city - the sun might not let you sleep today anyways! Photo: VisitOSLO/Fara Mohri ❤️

How to best enjoy the Akerhus Fortress in summer? Apart from its historical significance as a medieval castle and royal residence dating back to 1299, later readaption as a fortress in 1592 and to a renaissance castle between 1637-1648 (Thanks to for the facts!) The fortress grounds have so many more contemporary uses. This year (Middelalderfestivalen) is being organized 31st of May - 2nd of June at Akershus Fortress. Here you can partake in many medieval activities for both adults and children including sword fighting, archery, theater performances, historical reenactments and historical games. The possibilities are limitless! Photo by Stein Bolstad ❤️

The Norwegian Constitution was signed the 17th of May, 1814. Traditionally, and to this very day, our Constitutional Day is celebrated with a childrens parade, reminding us that the nations children are the future. On this day children are said to be allowed to eat as many ice creams as they want! :) 🍦🍨🍧🍡
Norwegians dress up in their national costume "Bunad", which has local and regional variations in colours and style, and often organize 17th of May breakfast celebrations with family and friends. Join us for this street party which is open to all today! Photos: (1) VisitOSLO/Tord Baklund (2) VisitOSLO/Thomas Johannessen ❤️

The 8th of May is Liberation and Veterans Day in Norway. This day is commemorated to celebrate our freedom and honour the Norwegian veterans from the Second World War, as well as other opposition figures and civilians who contributed to this struggle. On this day in 1945 Norway was liberated after five years of occupation. On this day you may see several commemorations of this historical day and those who lost their lives at different places around the city, most notable on Akershus Castle and Fortress. For more information about this historical time period we can reccomend a visit to Norway's Resistance Museum at the fortress.
You may also want to visit Roseslottet at Holmenkollen - the five golden pillars represents each one of the years Norway was under occupation. Containing more than 300 art pieces this outdoor art project will reamin open until the end of 2025. Photo (Akershus): Steinar Bolstad, Photo (Roseslottet): VisitOSLO/ Sandbox ❤️

Today, 1st of May, is international workers day! What better way to commemorate this day than by taking a stroll along the Akerselva river? We offer weekly historic river walks every Sunday! (More information for booking can be found in the link in our Instagram bio, in our Facebook events or on our website.)
The Labour museum is located in the former industrial area close to the river and exhibits much of Oslo's labour history. A tradition in Oslo is that the workers movements and unions gather on Youngstorget, one of Oslo's central squares, to give speeches regarding workers rights. The Oslo City Hall opened to the public in 1950. The vision for this building is to be the whole citys "living room" - entrance is free and is open most days there aren't other official events scheduled, from 9:00-16:00. The building houses the largets Carillion in the Nordic region. The 49 bells ring every hour from 7 am until midnight, starting and ending the day with songs by famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg.
The City Hall is the site of the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony which is awared here each year on December 10th at 1pm. The town hall is the seat of the city's administration, the city council. If you visit the building you may even be a witness to one of the many marriages that takes place in the building every day! Photos: Stein Bolstad ❤️

The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet moved from Folketeateret, at Youngstorget square, to the new Opera house in 2008. The building is designed by architect firm Snøhetta, and was the first building to be completed in the new, up-and-coming Bjørvika area. Bjørvika is an area of Oslo which has been revitalized in the last 15 years in order to increase citydwellers access to the fjord.
Did you know that visiting the Opera house both on the inside (in the foyer) and taking a stroll on the outside (on the roof) is free for all? Photos: Stein Bolstad ❤️

Spring is finally arriving to Oslo! You can always spot a Norwegian in Spring by the way they close their eyes and turn their face towards the sun after a long winters hibernation… much like the flowers which you can see popping up around the city!

Have you seen any of these flowers yet? "Hestehov" - literally Horse hoof, or coltsfoot (Yellow flower, similar to a small Dandilion), "Blåveis" - or Liverleaf (close to the Buttercup, but blue!), and "Hvitveis" - Wood anemone (a white version of the Liverleaf). We reccomend you enjoy the flowers in their natural habitat without picking them :) ❤️

Vi ønsker alle våre følgere en god påske til de som feirer!
We wish all our followers a peaceful Easter, to those who celebrate!
In Norway Easter traditions include: enjoying skiing, eating chocolate and oranges in the sun (if weather permits!), and simply enjoying some quiet time with loved ones. Easter is a lovely time to visit Oslo as its a quiter week than normal, with most citydwellers looking to commune with nature at cabins and skiresorts in the mountains. Some of us prefer what we call a "city-easter" however and enjoy strolling the parks and streets of Oslo witnessing the first signs of Spring!

Brighter and lighter days lie ahead! Today the 20th of March is the spring equinox, meaning the day is "same as the night" in latin, or "Vårjevndøgn" in Norwegian!
The sun turned on December 22nd on "Vintersolverv", the shortest day of the year, and since then the days have become longer and longer. We look forward to enjoying each day a bit more in this wonderful city with you! ❤️

Another important event in 2024 is the 100 year anniversary of Oslo getting its' original name back in 1924. This was celebrated in the city on New Years Eve with "church bells, canons and the squeeling of factory pipes and steamboats in the harbour - and loud cheering in the streets! (According to )
Previously to this, Oslo had bore the name Kristiania (with a K!) which was a Norwegian adaptation of the Danish Christiania (with a Ch!) after we no longer were under Danish rule in 1814. Luckily we got our beautiful and historic name back at last :)

Oslo 2024! We are celebrating several important anniversaries in Oslo this year! 2024 is the 400 year commemoration of the Oslo city fire which lasted several days burning the city to the ground 😱
Although the city had been settled below the Ekeberg hill for over 600 years, in 1624 King Christian IV decided a new city should be built on the Westside rather than the East of the Bjørvika cove, closer to the Akerhus Fortress. It was also given a new name "Christiania" (after its new founder!)

I år feirer vi at Magnus Lagabøtes (navnet hans betyr "han som reparerer loven") landslov fra 1274 blir 750 år! Norge var det første landet i Europa etter Rommerikets fall som fikk en landslov som var lik for hele landet. Loven ble brukt i godt over 400 år. ❤️

The Viking Ship Museum is closed and will reopen in 2027 as the Museum of the Viking Age!
When the doors open to this museum again you will be able to experience the world's best-preserved Viking ships. In the meantime, we can reccomend a visit with your guide to the other museums on the Bygdø Peninsula working with Norways long history of sea exploration: the Maritime, Fram and Kon-Tiki museums!
Here you can learn more about Norways ancient and modern fascination with the sea. You can see smaller original Viking boats from the Gokstad discovery at the Maritime museum and the ongoing building of a repllica! Learn more about Norwegian polar history and sea exploration by studying the legacies of exploreres Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen and Thor Heyherdahl.

Did you know that next to the Vigeland park you can find the Vigeland museum? The museum collection includes almost all of Gustav Vigelands art including the plaster originals for the sculptures in the park, many of them in 1:1 size. The museum offers a fascinating insight into the artists working process and vision for the park, as he worked and lived here for the last 20 years of his life. Photos: .vibe ❤️

If you have arrived to Oslo by cruise at the Filipstad terminal or taken a stroll along the Aker Brygge boardwalk out to Tjuvholmen (the so-called 'the thief islet') you might see a very strange looking, colourful tree... This is the Oslo Tree! . This is a public art installation which is 14 m high with a 14 m wide crown. There are 150.000 LED-lights which shift in colour and pattern. This tree, unlike most trees, is adapted to Norwegian winter conditions so you can enjoy it all year!
Right in front of the tree you can often see K/S Norge which is the Kings ship given by the Norwegian people to King Haakon VII in 1947. The Royal Yacht "Norge" is owned by his Majesty the King, but is run by the Navy. Photo: .vibe .no ❤️
