Ta turen innom Hamsunsenteret - et nasjonalt senter og museum viet til forfatteren og Nobelprisvinneren Knut Hamsun, hans liv og forfatterskap. Det ligger på Presteid i Hamarøy en times kjøring fra hytta.

Jakob og Laura har flyttet flere tonn stein for å lage sti mellom sjøen og inngangen til badet på hytta. Nå kan vi komme oss rett til varm dusj etter iskaldt bad i krystallklar sjø. Tang og tare er ryddet, men allikevel lurt å ha badesko for å ikke trå på skarpe skjell.
Legg merke til snøen som fortsatt ligger på fjellene i begynnelsen av juni.

Like a needle on the horizon, your gaze is drawn to Hamarøyskaftet across the fjord as it stands out as a unique phenomenon amongst the many specular mountains in the region. Hamarøy is well known for its literary association with Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun, but is also famous for its spectacular natural beauty.
After an hour’s drive from the cabin you’re at the start of Landstrykerstien - "Wanderers path". The track climbs abruptly from the parking area through small birch forests. After a short time you arrive at a narrow plateau with enchanting views to the south over Sagfjorden and back to Sirines, and north to Vestfjorden and Straumvatnet below. Here you can take the rewarding detour up to the base of Hamarøyskaftet for even more spectacular views. The peak is only accessible for climbers.
Then, follow the well-marked track down to Straumvatnet with a chance to relax on the beach - swimsuit optional.
The path continues through varied landscape with several opportunities to take side-tracks to places of interest, such as the cliffcaves at Mølnvika and the deserted farm at Sørdal that was used in the filming of Landstykere, based on the book of the same name by Knut Hamsun.
The path loops around Vassengfjellet og Nordlandsfjellet and brings you back to where you started. Expect to use about 4 hours of walking time for the round trip. The path is well marked with red T's. Make sure you wear good shoes.

The most accessible hike from the cabin is from Forsan close to the entrance of the long Steigen tunnel. You can walk the 3 km from the cabin towards the tunnel or park your car where the track starts. There are several paths that take you up the approximately 250 metres to a large lake - Forsanvatnet - nestled between the steep mountains behind the cabin. Enjoy the views of the fjord from above and majestetic scenery under the mountain peaks of Veggfjellan.

The aurora is a beautiful nighttime phenomenon that is worth traveling to arctic regions just to observe. This area of Northern Norway is one of the worlds best places to experience Aurora Borealis. From September to March you can sit in the comfort of the northward facing panoramic windows of the cabin and see the magnificent lights that dance spontaneously and like crazy above your head. Turn off all electrical lights for the full effect. The phenomenon occurs when particles are thrown out from the sun and into deep space hitting the earth's athmosphere 100 km above your head.
With a bit of luck and a combination of good weather, clear skies and dark evenings, you will get to see the Northern lights and be mesmerized. All photos presented here are taken at the cabin, using long exposure time. You can check the Nothern Light forcast or download apps to your phone, but in my experience you just have to keep an eye out ;-)

This is where I escape to when the need to connect with nature and my roots overwhelms me. Whenever possible we invite friends and strangers (friends we just haven't had the pleasure to meet yet) to spend a few days here. Booking is easy to do through AirBnB.
