Every winter, the Arctic cod embarks on one of nature’s most impressive migrations 🌊

Swimming thousands of kilometers from the Barents Sea to the coastal waters of Lofoten, the species transforms Lofoten into the fishing capital of Norway during the winter months. 🐟❄️

The Arctic cod is larger than regular coastal cod at this time of year because it spends most of its life in the nutrient-rich Barents Sea, where it grows big and strong.

The journey to Lofoten requires a lot of energy and endurance. To sustain this effort, the skrei stores large amounts of fat and nutrients in its muscles, making it both larger and more robust than coastal cod.

This all contributes to a distinctive quality: firm, white flesh and an impressive size, making it a highly sought-after delicacy in Norway and internationally 😋

Watching the northern lights from above Svolvær can be a wonderful experience, reminding us how nature and human every day life coexist.

There are though some challenges when it comes to hiking during winter, and especially in the dark. Therefore we highly recommend bringing an experienced guide when combining northern light hunting and hiking.

Polar night hiking views while waiting for the snow to return 💫❄️

In Lofoten, the early winter brings a wide range of weather conditions – some years, the mountains are blanketed in thick snow, while other times, the landscape can be almost entirely bare.

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Lofoten enjoys a relatively mild climate for its latitude, leading to temperature swings between frost and mild weather🥰

In autumn, the sea eagles in Lofoten become more active as they prepare for the colder months ahead ❄️

With shorter days and cooler temperatures, they often hunt more frequently to build up their energy reserves.

This season is also when young eagles, born in spring, start to explore and learn crucial hunting skills from their parents.

Autumn is therefore an ideal time to see sea eagles in action as they make the most of the seasonal abundance before winter arrives🍂
