In August we slowly transition from summer to autumn in Tromsø. The Sun begins to hide and we leave behind the Midnight Sun.

August in Tromsø is very beautiful. We spend a lot of time in the forest and mountains. You can walk through the woods, ride a bike, appreciate the incredible landscapes of the fjords, or just stay in the city. This is a vibrant time in Tromsø. Music keeps the streets of Tromsø exciting, such as the Tromsø Jazz Festival and the music festival in Tromsø or Rakettnatt.

July is gone, a month in which we enjoy summer adventures. We enjoyed the midnight sun, incredible landscapes, walks through the forests and along the fjords, we were kayaking, and we cycled through Tromsøya.

Tromsø and its surroundings are a true paradise. Ocean, fjords, lakes, mountains, sunny nights, the beautiful arctic summer allows outdoor activities and offers unique opportunities to enjoy nature.

Over the years Tromsø has been the starting point for many polar expeditions. Great adventurers like Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, Godfred Hansen and Hjalmar Johansen, chose this city to launch their explorations.

Even today Tromsø remains the starting point for many of these Arctic explorations and adventures.

Many times we have said that Tromsø is the capital of the Arctic and the greatest adventures to the North Pole have started from here. From the port of Tromsø. One of the largest fishing ports in Norway, a major logistics hub in northern Norway, and a major destination for cruise lines.

Take a walk along the harbor and you will find many cozy old wooden houses and modern constructions, combined with the many fishing and local Arctic tour boats.

How are the July nights in Tromsø?

The Sun does not go away. It barely touches the horizon and rises again. That's why arctic adventures in the summer never end.

Some prefer to enjoy the Midnight Sun in a fjord, or on the beach of Telegrafbukta. But you can also go to the top of Fjellheisen or to the edge of the Nordkapp.

In the heart of downtown Tromsø lives one of the most important icons of the city.

"Løkkekiosken" is a bar and kiosk built on the initiative of 18-year-old Margit Løkke in 1911. Today it is called "Rakettkiosken" due to its rocket-like appearance.

This is a place with a great history, tasty snacks, and traditional drinks. You can order beer from the city, or a delicious typical mulled wine.

In the Year of Cultural Heritage 2009, the National Heritage Board designated Rakettkiosken in Tromsø as a cultural monument of national importance.

Today we celebrate Sankthans!

Sankthans is an old folk tradition to celebrate the summer solstice, the time of year when nature is at its most beautiful. And it also marks the time when the days start to get shorter and darker. The fire has always been cleansing and protective, so we lit bonfires to protect ourselves from evil forces.

Along the water fronts, all around the Tromsø area, you can find families and friends lighting big bonfires and gathering around them.

Today is the Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere, and we are all enjoying the longest day of the year. We decided to go on a picnic to enjoy this wonderful day, although we are only half way through and we still have 30 more days to go.

One of the most beautiful visits on the Kvaløya Fjords tour is a stop in Sommaroy. Crystal clear waters, blue skies, fine white sand beaches, long golden sunsets, Sommaroy is truly an enchanting place.

In recent years, Arctic wildlife and inhabitants have faced rapid and dramatic impacts related to global climate change, with temperatures rising faster than the world’s average, causing a rapid decline in sea ice.

In this context, Polaria, located in Tromsø city centre, makes a great contribution to raising awareness of this issue. Polaria is a partner of the FRAM High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment. The purpose of Polaria is to showcase this research and make it accessible to the public.
