A Celebration of Womanhood Festival - Women Only

Attukal Pongala festival is a grand and exuberant celebration of womanhood. Celebrated over 10 days during the month of Makaram-Kumbham as per the Malayalam calendar) with great pomp and splendour at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, this is a unique, all-
women festival (one of the few women-only festivals in the world). Women gather here in humongous numbers from all over India, irrespective of caste, creed or religion, to worship the presiding deity, GoddessAttukal Amma or Supreme Goddess Parvathy, Lord Shiva’s consort.

As per popular myth, the goddess stopped here on her way to Kerala from the ancient city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

The event even finds mention in The Guinness Book of World Records for the largest women-only gathering.
On the night of the 9th day of Attukal Pongala, women devotees pay obeisance to the Mother Goddess Attukal Amma during a grand ritual ceremonial offering of Pongal (literally meaning ‘to boil over’), symbolic of sacrifice. Pongal is a rice porridge prepared in an earthen pot with sweet brown molasses, grated coconut, nuts and raisins in clarified butter or ghee), called Kuruthitharpanam.
