Sometimes, the quickest way to get to the mountain is on a jeep. Okay, maybe changing a couple of jeeps!

Not to brag about ourselves, but we're pretty good at what we do: guiding close groups of people on safe and professional mountain adventures.

Don't just take our word for it. This is what Jeremy had to say about his Manaslu Fastpack 2024 experience:

"I absolutely felt confident that signing up with HAL was the best choice for me. After the trip, I would say I know it was the right decision. There is no one else in the Himalayas doing trips like this, specifically...light and fast. I had great guidance and confidence in Sudeep. He planned everything extremely well, is a great communicator, listener and even handled the curve balls thrown at us with ease and professionalism. I highly recommend HAL."

Manaslu Fastpack is scheduled for Oct 11-26, 2025.

End of season reflections

Namaste from the Himalayas!

As the dust settles on another exciting season of adventures, we're taking a moment to reflect on some of our recent trips. The Khopra Ridge and North Annapurna Base Camp trek offered stunning views and a deeper appreciation for community run lodges and the fragility of the mountain environment. Our Kanchenjunga to Kathmandu Valley Rim expedition presented its own set of challenges, from navigating unexpected changes in plans to embracing the beauty of the Kathmandu Valley Rim. The Snowman trek in Bhutan with the Divine Marmots was a mini HAL reunion (Chris Maclean, Sharon Weir, Tony & Sudeep) in a unique cultural setting alongside breathtaking Himalayan scenery. The Manaslu Fastpack was a special trip, with several mini-adventures; from helping to build bridges to making friends with border patrol on a side trip to the Tibetan border!

We also used this season to highlight important issues facing the adventure community. Sudeep recently penned a blog post on the state of emergency evacuations in Nepal, highlighting the need for a more robust and efficient system. We are also exploring new routes to make the classic Annapurna Circuit an actual circuit. Watch out for updates on this!

In other news, we unveiled our new HAL logo, inspired by our shared passion for exploring the Himalayas and experimenting with new ways to experience the mountains. The ridgeline featured in the logo pays homage to the Langtang range, a constant backdrop to our 2016 adventure where Himalayan Adventure Labs was coined.

We were excited to showcase the Himalayan Outdoor Safety Initiative (HOSI) at the recent Nepal Adventure Expo in Kathmandu. We are continuing with the HAL grant program, and this year's recipient is Sushmita Bhandari from National College who is researching the perceptions, benefits, and challenges that farmers face when using different types of seeds.

We're already looking forward to the next year!

.takle and recently led a group of friends on the Khopra Ridge trek, located in the foothills of the Annapurna range. The trek began in the scenic village of Ghandruk. With the onset of winter, we enjoyed relatively fewer crowds on the trails. Views of Annapurnas, Dhaulagiri and Macchapurchre were our constant companions.

At Khopra, one team exited the trail at Paudwar. Srijan and Sudeep have continued their journey towards North Annapurna Base Camp.

From Kanchenjunga to the Kathmandu Valley Rim: A tale of two treks

Our initial goal was a grand trek from Kanchenjunga to Makalu, but fate had other plans. After facing a medical emergency in the Kanchenjunga region, we left the mountains early, got clearance from doctors, and shifted gears to the Kathmandu Valley Rim.

The KVR presented its own set of challenges, with demanding terrain featuring significant elevation gain – approximately 9,714 meters. We navigated washed-out trails and enjoyed stunning views of Kathmandu and beyond throughout the journey.

This adventure reminded us that the most memorable journeys often involve unexpected twists and turns. Having said that, we know we will be back in Kanchenjunga again to make another journey westwards.

Snowman Fastpack 2024 Trip Report

We approached Paro airport with excitement about the journey ahead. As we entered the airport’s arrival area, we were greeted by beautiful wood carvings, with vibrant colors and paintings. It felt like entering a boutique hotel!

This was HAL's inaugural Snowman trek, and the goal was to trek the first half also known as the Laya-Gasa route. A dream that Tony and Sharon had nurtured for years. Our team consisted of Chris, Tony and Sharon (all HAL alum), Sudeep and Kesang (a local guide). It felt like a reunion of adventure partners.

Before starting the trek, we acclimatized with hikes to Taktsang Monastery, Chele La, and Kila Goenpa Nunnery. In between we explored Paro, tried archery ( Sharon has a knack for it), ate belly-full of delicious food often accompanied by popular Bhutanese dish ema datshi (chilly cheese). Chilly is a big part of Bhutanese cuisine and we were reminded of it throughout our trip.

If you want to relive our Bhutan adventure please head to our website under the stories section.

Happy trails.

Fann Fastpack

Trace the footsteps of ancient traders on the Silk Road and immerse yourself in the stunning Fann Mountains of Tajikistan's Pamir-Alay region.

The journey begins in Samarkand, a city that has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. Once a bustling crossroads on the Silk Road, Samarkand boasts stunning architecture, including the iconic Registan Square. From Samarkand, we'll venture into the heart of the Fann Mountains, a range known for its pristine lakes, snow-capped peaks, and diverse flora and fauna.

Manaslu Fastpack 2024 trip report is out!

On Day 0, we took a jeep to Nyauli waterfall and stretched our legs with a short hike to Khorlabesi. This was the first time the HAL team stayed in Khorlabesi, and while scouting the village, Jeremy and Sudeep discovered a charming lodge with its own trout farm—a pleasant surprise and the start of countless delicious dal-bhat meals. The following day, as we made our way to Philim, we encountered a washed-away bridge just before Dovan due to the previous night’s heavy rain. Crossing the river was risky because of the strong current. After hours of brainstorming and working with locals, we managed to construct a makeshift bridge using unused electric poles, a ladder, and stone slates. It was a collaborative effort that allowed us to continue our journey safely.

If you are interested in how the story unfolded, you can read the trip report under the ‘Stories’ section on our website. And if you want to be part of the adventure, join us next year; Oct 11-26, 2025!

Our K2M team had to leave the mountains early. We had some time left, so we decided to get on the trails nearby ~ 175k on the Kathmandu Valley Rim. Day 5/8 completed. While it is not a high altitude environment, the sense of adventure is there, with views of the mountains.

Day 3 K2M; Sekathum to Amjilosa

Right after leaving Sekathum we took a detour on a new trail which is impressively build on a hillside. Kudos to the locals! We gained some altitude today and the Ghunsa valley is slowly opening up. Night at beautiful village of Amjilosa.
