Nepal open for trekking from 17 October
Domestic flights, hotels, restaurants, intercity buses also allowed from 17 September

As a part of its gradual opening up after a six-month Covid-19 lockdown, Nepal’s Cabinet decided to allow domestic flights, intercity buses, hotels and restaurants to reopen from Thursday. Trekking and mountaineering groups will also be allowed to take foreign clients up to the mountains from 17 October, government spokesperson and Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali told a briefing. The decisions were taken on Monday’s Cabinet meeting on the recommendation of the Covid-19 Crisis Management Committee (CCMC).

The government had relaxed the lockdown from 13 September in Kathmandu Valley, allowing shops to reopen for limited times, and on certain days of the week. Public transport, taxis and private vehicles were also allowed on odd-even days. From 1 September, limited regular international flights were also allowed as long as the total number of arriving passengers daily did not exceed 800. Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Yogesh Bhattarai hinted last week that up to 3,000 passengers a day may soon be allowed to land.

However, foreigners are still not allowed to travel to Nepal, and all passengers must have RT PCR negative reports done 72 hours before departure. Despite this, inbound passengers have complained about unnecessarily long waits at holding centres in Kathmandu on arrival. The decision will come as welcome relief to Nepal’s domestic airlines which have had most of their planes and helicopters grounded for the past six months. Hotels had been allowed to reopen after 21 July, but were closed again on 20 August when Covid-19 cases began to rise.

The relaxation of restrictions come even as the number of confirmed cases in Nepal has been rising at between 1,000-1,500 every day, with more than half of them in Kathmandu Valley. On Tuesday, there were 1,451 new cases nationwide, bringing the total to 56,778.

Eleven more patients died from Covid-19 on 15 September, and the total now stands at 371. More than 40,000 have recovered, and there are 15,779 active cases of which 8,139 are symptomatic and are in hospital isolation wards. Foreign Minister Gyawali said that although travel restrictions were being eased, planes, hotels and restaurants will have to observe strict protocols on separation and masks. Long-distance buses will only be allowed to carry half the number of passengers, and everyone has to follow the protocols. Domestic airlines will have to follow strict hygiene rules on check-in, ramp buses, and on-board aircraft.
Hotels have had almost no income since March, and have laid off a quarter of their staff, with others taking pay cuts. Nearly 1.2 million tourists visited Nepal in 2019, and this year the government was promoting Visit Nepal Year with a target of reaching 2 million.

Tourism brought in $700 million in 2018-19, and makes up 8% of Nepal’s GDP. Nearly half-a-million Nepalis are directly employed in the trekking and mountaineering sector, with 2 million others benefiting indirectly from tourism. The government was also beginning to feel the pinch from the drop in revenue from taxes on hotels, restaurants and also fees from trekking and climbing permits.

Even prior to this announcement, two expeditions had been granted permission to climb in Nepal. One was a special permit for an all-Nepali expedition to Mt Baruntse which has already left for base camp, and the other to a 15-member Bahraini military expedition to Mt Manaslu that includes three Britons. The Bahrainis are arriving in Kathmandu on a charter flight on Wednesday.

Nepal opens for tourism, autumn climbing activities

KATHMANDU: With the government announcing to resume all international and domestic flights from August 17, the Ministry of Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation today said that it would let all tourism related activities including mountain climbing in the autumn season commence.
With the latest announcement, the tourism fraternity believes that the industry which incurred a loss of over 10 billion rupees a month during the COVID-induced nationwide lockdown would gradually return to a new normal.
“The ministry plans to resume all tourism related activities by following health and safety protocols from August 17,” ministry’s secretary Kedar Bahadur Adhikari said, adding that safety protocols are being finalised by holding consultations with stakeholders concerned.
According to the Cabinet decision, flights will be resumed in three phases. In the first phase, flights will be operated to the destinations that are less affected by COVID-19. After that, gradually, flights will be operated to other destinations in the second and third phases. During the initial period of flight resumption, all airline companies will not be allowed to operate all their aircraft at once. Permission to operate aircraft will be given based on the destination and the number of passengers.
“MoCTCA will coordinate with the Ministry of Health and Population for safety of the passengers travelling via commercial flights if any health issue does arise.”
Dr Samir Kumar Adhikari, Joint-Spokesperson at the Ministry of Health and Population, said that the ministry would soon come up with new guidelines on handling of the arriving air passengers after August 17.
“All passengers who plan to arrive here on charter or repatriation flights until August 16 should go to quarantine centres,” Adhikari said, adding that passengers of the scheduled commercial flights must show their PCR report to enter Nepal thereafter.
According to him, the Health Ministry has been discussing with the stakeholders and experts to decide on whether passengers of the scheduled international flights should go for self-quarantine even after producing the PCR test report.
Raj Kumar Chhetri, Spokesperson at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, said that CAAN, Tribhuvan International Airport and respective airlines have also prepared standard operating procedures to resume domestic and international flights.
“CAAN is holding a series of meetings with domestic airlines tomorrow and day after to facilitate operations following health and safety protocols,” he said. Both domestic and international flights will be operated under the ‘Guidance to Airlines, Airports and Ground Services for Operations during COVID-19’, he added.
The Department of Tourism is all set to issue climbing permits for the autumn season after the government decided to resume domestic and international.

📢 Upper Mustang Trekking - 17 Days 2020

Upper Mustang trek is one of the best treks for those who want to experience the remote and untouched treasures of the Himalayas. The region between Manang and Dolpo in the north-central part of the country was opened to tourism only after 1992 due to its proximity to Tibet. Being the last place in Nepal to be ruled by a king and the restrictions imposed by the government have aptly given the region its name – The last forbidden kingdom.
Mustang derives its name from the Tibetan word Mun Tan that translates to fertile plain. However, the rain-shadow area of the Annapurna massif and Dhaulagiri range has turned the land into a barren desert. This land of contradiction is hence also known as the mountain desert.
The isolation has resulted in a settlement with cultures, customs, and lifestyles still unaffected by the modern world. You can experience the authentic Nepali-Tibetan infused cultures along with heritages and biodiversity. We encounter rice, wheat, barley, potato and other fields in the arid land of the Tamang, Gurung, Mustangi and Tibetan inhabitants.
Upper Mustang is a barren landscape of eroded sandstone pillars and moraine terraces that form a colorful mosaic of yellow, red, and browns. The destination warms your soul with the hearty welcome from the Buddhists who inhabit this other-worldly place.
