TAKIN - NATIONAL ANIMAL OF BHUTAN 🇧🇹
Bhutan Takin is a vulnerable hoofed herbivore that looks like a mix of a bull and a goat. The takin has small ears, a bulbous nose and small, backward-pointing horns, shaggy brown coat that morphs into black around the snout, belly and legs. It's a rather clumsy-looking animal, its thick, cow-like torso appearing a bit too big and stocky for its short legs. Bhutan's takins live in the country's Himalayan forests and mountains in the north of the country. They mostly live in families of around 20 individuals. The takin, a generally unaggressive herbivore - that seems fitting, as Bhutan is a very peaceful nation with unique identity.

Stories are told that Lam Drukpa Kunley, a master of spiritual significance, arrived in Bhutan from Tibet in the 15th century to preach religious teachings.
The Bhutanese people asked him to evoke a miracle. He agreed on the condition that he would be fed a whole cow and a whole goat. The Tibetan saint ate the meat of both animals but left the bones behind. Then, with a flick of his fingers, he slipped the goat’s head onto the cow’s body and recited a mantra - the animal immediately came to life. He used his magical prowess to bring a new critter to life, which he named the “Dong Gyem Tsey” – Takin.

The Bhutan Takin was identified as the country’s official emblem in 1985. If you come to Bhutan you can see takins in the small, forested Motithang Takin Preserve just outside the capital city of Thimphu.
Come to Bhutan with Asiatic Roads and we organize an excellent trip to see unique Bhutan's takin!

ARCHERY IN BHUTAN 🏹🇧🇹
Archery in Bhutan is not just a sport, but the part of culture and identity. Since ancient times, bows and arrows were almost certainly used as hunting tools and weapons in war. In modern Bhutan, hunting is generally banned, so they are now essentially used only for sport and rituals.
💥Bows and arrows are considered as favorable symbols in Bhutan. The bow and arrow is found throughout the art, mythology and theology of the region, held by gods and deities, part of vivid legends, mentioned in sacred texts and painted on the walls of the dzongs. It is believed, that in the 10th century. Buddhist monk, Lhalung Pelgyi Dorje, performed the Black Hat Dance to entertain Tibetan King Langdarma who persecuted Buddhism, during which he drew a bow and arrow hidden in the big sleeves of costume and killed the king. Later in 1864 an arrow shot by the father of the first king of Bhutan have killed a British general, when the British attempted to enter and conquer the country.
💥In 1971, archery was officially declared a national sport of Bhutan. Archery tournaments occur regularly at the local, regional and national levels, with every village fielding its own team of archers. And this sport is so popular that it is even held during religious festivals and events.
💥A traditional bow in Bhutan is made from a large and thick species of bamboo called pagshing. Bowstrings are made from nettle fibre or other such materials. Arrows are made from a species of lightweight bamboo that has a straight stem and also generally of a narrow and uniform girth. The distance to the targets is about 120 meters. The targets are carved from wood and brightly painted.
💥Archery competition is always a holiday. It is normally played between two teams, with each member playing a pair of arrows. Points are calculated based on direct hits on the target. When a player hits the target, his colleagues often celebrate it with a dance at both ends of the range. While men play archery, the women perform dances and bring picnic lunches.

Come to Bhutan and try yourself as an archer!

NEPAL: JANAKPUR - BIRTH PLACE OF GODDESS SITA 🇳🇵🔱
Janakpur, also known as Janakpurdham, is one of the largest city in the Terai region of Nepal. It was founded in the early 12th century, but its history is much longer. It is believed, that during the Treta Yug period about 12,000 years ago Janakpur used to be the capital of King Janak’s Kingdom of Mithila and became a place where the events of the Hindu epic Ramayana took place. Goddess Sita was born here and it is the place where she met and married Lord Ram.
That's why Janakpur has been an important pilgrimage site for centuries. The prime attractions of Janakpur is the magnificent temple dedicated to Sita called the Janaki Mandir and Ran & Sita Vivaha Mandap. The best time to visit these holy sites is city’s annual Vivaha Panchami Festival in Nov-Dec, which celebrates the marriage of Sita and Rama with numerous rituals. The temples are decorated with special arts and lights and you can experience the euphoric as well as the spiritual atmosphere around the temple’s premises.
Janakpur is also well-known for its rich cultural history, arts, language and literature. It is the heartland of the Mithila civilization, a melting pot of diverse cultures, religions and opportunities. Sometimes it is called City of Ponds as there're more than seventy ponds here. The pleasant weather, the grand and colorful festivals throughout the year, the stunning architecture of the temples and the friendly locals make Janakpur one of the best spots for tourists in Nepal.
Let's discover Janakpur with Asiatic Roads!

BHUTAN: HOT STONE BATHS 🇧🇹✨
A visit to Bhutan would be incomplete without experiencing a hot stone bath, and hence this must feature on every visitor's itinerary. The traditional healing culture of hot stone bath in Bhutan, dates back centuries and is derived from ancient Tibetan medicine and Indian Ayurvedic practices. A traditional hot stone bath uses rocks taken from the river, heated till red hot and then placed in Menchu - fresh river water mixed with artemisia (Khempa) leaves in a wooden hot tub made of oak. The rocks then crack and steam, releasing key minerals into the water which alleviate aches and pains and are said to have broader medicinal properties. The heat from the water, the minerals released from the stones, and the essential oils of local herbs are believed to have a miraculous effect on the body and mind.
The hot stone bath is a ritual and a form of traditional Bhutanese culture. In winter families soaked after the seasonal farm work. The long, healing bath relaxed their tired bodies and helped cure their backaches and joint pains.
These days the practice is offered countrywide and you can opt for a luxurious version or go to a local farmhouse where the bath is laid on by your hosts. The traditional hot stone bath experience is enhanced by a pot of herbal tea and peaceful spa music.
Asiatic Roads invites you to explore the ancient culture and traditions of Bhutan and experience Hot stone baths which help to harmonize the body and mind with its therapeutic and healing effect.

NEPAL IN MOVIES 🇳🇵📽🎬
Picturesque landscapes and rich cultural heritage of Nepal always attract people of Art and the famous Film directors and Hollywood producers among them!
Let's remember the best epic movies filmed in Nepal:
📌 LITTLE BUDDHA - Bernardo Bertolucci, 1993 🏛
Ambitious and extremely beautiful drama starring Keanu Reeves as Siddhartha Gautam. The film follows three children, one American and two Nepali, who might be the reincarnation of a Buddhist spiritual teacher Lama Dorje, and their story is told in parallel with the story of Gautam Buddha. Bhaktapur Durbar Square had been filmed as for Siddhartha’s Kapilvastu palace.

📌 SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET - Jean-Jacques Annaud, 1997 🙏
Biographical war drama based on the true story of Heinrich Harrer, a mountaineer who became friends with the 14th Dalai Lama after entering Tibet during World War II and spent 7 years in Lhasa until the Battle of Chamdo in 1950, when Tibet was occupied by China, tells a story of the climber learning selfishness from the young Dalai Lama. The movie was partly filmed in Nepal.

📌HYMALAYA: CARAVAN - Eric Vally, 1999 ⛰
Filmed over seven months in the forbidden Dolpo region of Nepal, Academy Award-nominated Himalaya tells the story of a generational struggle for the leadership of a tiny mountain village between its proud old chief and a headstrong young caravanner.

📌 EVEREST, 2015 🏔⛏
An adventure thriller film based on the events of 1996 Mount Everest disaster. Although the mountain scenes were filmed in New Zealand, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, John Hawke, Martin Henderson and film crew were in Nepal in January, 2014 for the shooting of the scenes in Kathmandu and on the trail to Everest Base camp.

Superhero movie directed by Scott Derrickson tells the story of Dr. Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who becomes a powerful sorcerer. The movie was partly filmed in Nepal - in Kathmandu and the surrounding areas, including the Pashupatinath Temple and the ancient city of Bhaktapur.

INDRA JATRA 🎉✨🎭🇳🇵
Today, September, 28, the biggest religious street festival Indra Jatra is held in Kathmandu. This is an important harvest festival marking the end of monsoon season and a time to pay homage to the god Indra, King of the Devas and the god of Rain, and his mother Dagini (or Aditi), to ensure they bless the coming harvest.
The legend behind this story says that Indra, in human form, visited Kathmandu Valley to pick a flower of night Jasmin that his mother wanted to use in a ritual. He was caught and accused of stealing by the citizens of Kathmandu. Dagini looking for her son descended from heaven and citizens realised that they caught Indra and he was promptly released. Dagini thanked the people for releasing her son and promised to send thick fogs in winter, which will allow the grain crop to grow.
Indra Jatra has been holding in Kathmandu valley since X-XI century and also includes the Kumari Jatra and Bhairav Jatra festivals as a chariot procession along the streets of Kathmandu and Bhairav idols displays.
The Highlights of the Indra Jatra festival:
1. YOSIN THANEGU at Kathmandu Durbar Square - the er****on of Yosin, a pole from which the banner of Indra is unfurled.
2. Mask of SWETA BHAIRAV is displayed at Durbar Square throughout the eight days of the festival. A pipe sticking out of the mouth of mask dispenses alcohol and rice beer as sacred drink on different days.
3 KUMARI JATRA 🎊
three chariots of Living Goddess Kumari and following her Ganesh and Bhairav carrying human representations of the deities accompanied by musicians and dancers are pulled along the festival route through Kathmandu.
4. Traditional ritual dances & processions during Festival:
- PULU KISI DANCE 🐘 - performed by the man in the mask of a white elephant believed to be the carrier of Indra. Pulu Kisi goes through the streets in search for his imprisoned master. It does naughty and mischievous things by running through the street knocking anyone that comes in its path and swinging its tail in an amazing manner.
- MAJIPA LAKHEY 👹 - The demon dance is performed on the streets. Majipa considered to be the protector of the children alongside Pulukisi helps in crowd control before chariot procession.
- DAGINI procession 💃 re-enacts Indra mother's going around town in search of her son. Dagini is followed by many people who has lost their family member in that specific year.
5. On the last day, the yosin pole at Durbar Square is taken down markuing the end of the festivities

ANNAPURNA - THE MOUNTAIN AND GODDESS 🏔🔱🏺
The 10th highest peak of the world, the formidable and majestic Annapurna, 8091m - is called after beautiful and prosperous goddess of fertility and food Annapurna.
As Annapurna Mountain feeds the fertile valleys with melting glaciers, so does Annapurna the goddess bestow prosperity and life on all living things. According to legend, Annapurna is one of the incarnations of the goddess Parvati, wife of Shiva and mother of the natural world. One day, Shiva and Parvati quarrelled, and Parvati decided to disappear, taking away her half of the cosmic energy that supported the rotation of the Earth and provided the material comfort of mankind. Then the Earth was struck by drought and famine. The rivers dried up and the crops were lost in the fields. Then Shiva realized the importance of material prosperity and Parvati's magnificence. Parvati returned secretly as a new deity, the goddess of food - Annapurna depicted with a golden bowl of porridge and a precious bucket. Even Shiva, turned into taking a starving beggar, bowed to her in the guise of Annapurna to apologize and restore the harmony of creation.

The Annapurna Goddess is very popular in Nepal. She is worshipped in temples as a precious vessel filled with grain. And Annapurna Mountain is honored as a majestic embodiment of the goddess and her abode next to the sacred abode of her consort Shiva 🔱 at the top of Machapuchhare. The valley in the heart of the Himalayas at the foothills of these peaks bears the name "Sanctuary of Annapurna". For centuries the way to the valley was closed as it was considered sacred!
Even today the earth’s special energies are felt here, and the dawn at the foot of Annapurna is awe-inspiring! 🌄 It seems the gods live here to this day!

NEPAL TRADITIONS - G*I JATRA 🇳🇵🐂
This year the beginning of calendar Autumn is marked by G*i Jatra Festival!
G*i Jatra literally means the festival of cows (G*i means cow). It is celebrated in 1st day of dark fortnight of Gunla according to lunar calendar, the day after great Hindu holiday Janai Purnima, with dancing, singing, mirth and laughter to commemorate those who have died during the year.
During the festival, it is a tradition that any family who has lost a relative during the last year participates in a procession through the streets of city, leading a cow or young boys having dressed as cow. In Hinduism, cow is a sacred animal and it is considered that the dead cross the Baitarni river in the afterlife by holding onto the tail of a cow.
The legend says - In the 17th century King Pratap Malla lost his son, the queen was grief-stricken. To show his wife that death is a natural part of life, he called on people to hold a carnival if someone has died in their family.
When the Queen saw the costumes and celebration, she started smiling for the first time since her son’s death. Since then every year the people of Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur and Kirtipur observe this festival with the great significance and joking during the procession that goes through the streets.

TIBET: LHASA TOP-5 🏯🇨🇳
Lhasa is the capital of Tibet, its largest and most attractive city. It is the dream destination for many travelers and seekers of spiritual perfection. In Tibetan, Lhasa means the Land of the Gods, or "Holy Place", and still justifies this name. As the center of Tibetan Buddhism, Lhasa is featured in its ancient Buddhist temples and monasteries and other buildings.
Our list of the main attractions of the capital of Tibet:
1️⃣ POTALA 🏯
The must-see attraction in Lhasa - famous and marvelous Potala Palace is the center of Tibetan culture, history and religion. In Tibetan Potala means «Mystical Mountain». The history of the Palace dates back to the 7th century, when the first palace appeared on the Red Mountain. Subsequently, the building was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded, and from the 17th century became the main residence of the ruler of Tibet - the Dalai Lama. Today the beautiful ex-residence of the Dalai Lama is a museum of arts which keeps more than 70,000 arts and more than 60,000 Buddhist scriptures. Divided into 13 floors, the palace has an area of more than 130 thousand sq.m and there's no exact data on how many rooms and halls in Potala at all.
2️⃣ JOKHANG TEMPLE 🙏
The holiest and most spiritual place in Lhasa, where you can feel the strong belief of Buddhism of Tibetan. The Jokhang was founded during King Songtsen Gampo's reign in 7th century. According to tradition, the temple houses important Buddhist statues and images, which was brought to Tibet by king's two brides: Princess Wencheng of China and Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal. The temple was enlarged several times. The temple complex has more than 3,000 images of the Buddha and other deities (including 26 m image of the Buddha and historical figures, in addition to manuscripts and other objects. Everyday thousands of locals come here for pilgrimage.
3️⃣ BARKHOR Street 🤠📸
Barkhor Street in the Center of life in Lhasa. It's not only the most prosperous tourism center, but also one of the top three circumambulations / kora routes in the city. You can see Buddhist pilgrims walking clockwise and turning the prayer wheel to worship the Buddha every morning and especially the late afternoon. This street will both be a very good place to find diverse Tibetan treasures and tell you the magic power of Buddhist religion.
4️⃣ NORBULINKA 🌺🌳
Norbulingka, meaning the Park of Treasures, is regarded as the “Summer residence of Dalai Lama” in Lhasa. Being the largest park in the city, it provides amazing garden landscape with lakes and floras in all colors. Besides, the magnificent palace buildings are great places to visit, where you can admire many precious paintings and relics…
5️⃣ SERA, DREPUNG & GANDEN MONASTERIES 🔶
These three famous monasteries of Gelug order used to be a part of Tibetan State are situated in Lhasa surroundings, not far from the city center. So you can go there to learn about the life of the monks and know a lot about spiritual history of Tibet.
📍 Sera monastery - is one of the largest Buddhist monasteries and universities in the world located 2 km to the north of Lhasa. It was founded in the 15th century. Here you can witness the debate sessions, which were held according to a fixed schedule
📍 Ganden Monastery is also one of the "great three" Gelug monasteries 40 km north-west from Lhasa at the top of Wangbur Mountain, at an altitude of 4,300m. It was founded in 1409 by Tsongkhapa. The three main sights here are the Serdung, which contains the tomb of Tsongkhapa, the Tsokchen Assembly Hall and the Ngam Cho Khang the chapel where Tsongkhapa traditionally taught.
📍 Drepung is the largest of all Tibetan monasteries and is located on the Gambo Utse mountain, 5 km from Lhasa. It was founded in 1416 by one of Tsongkhapa's main disciples, and was named after the sacred abode in South India. Drepung was the principal seat of the Gelugpa school and known for the high standards of its academic study. The chief buildings including the four colleges, the Tsokchen, and the Dalai Lamas' residence are worth to visit.
