A severe flood has recently struck Thame village in the Everest region of Nepal, believed to have been caused by a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) from Thyanbo or Thengbo Glacial Lake. This disaster occurred on August 16, 2024, and has led to significant devastation in the village, which is famous for being the birthplace of Tenzing Norgay, one of the first climbers to summit Mount Everest. The floodwaters have destroyed a significant portion of the village, sweeping away over half of its structures, including homes, hotels, a school, and a health clinic. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported so far, though the village's remaining structures are largely uninhabitable, forcing residents to evacuate to safer areas. The flood has also prompted authorities to issue high-alert warnings to downstream communities along the Dudh Koshi River due to the risk of further flooding. The situation highlights the growing threat posed by climate change in the Himalayas, where rising temperatures are increasing the frequency and severity of such glacial lake outburst events, putting mountain communities at greater risk.
