Domestic flights carrying tourists who come for trekking in Nepal are a significant part of the country’s tourism infrastructure. Many tourists travel to Nepal specifically to trek in its renowned mountainous regions, including popular trekking destinations such as the Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang Valley, and Manaslu Circuit.
Since the major trekking regions are in remote mountainous areas, many tourists use domestic flights to reach starting points of treks. These flights often depart from Kathmandu (the capital city) and head to small regional airports, such as:
1. Lukla Airport (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) – the gateway to the Everest region.
2. Pokhara Airport – the entry point for the Annapurna and Mustang regions.
3. Jomsom Airport – used by trekkers heading to the Mustang and Upper Mustang regions.
4. Phaplu Airport – another option for trekkers headed to the Everest region.
Importance of Domestic Flights for Tourists
• Time-Saving: Many trekking areas are difficult to access by road, and flights reduce days of travel. For example, a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla takes around 30 minutes, whereas reaching the same destination by road and trekking could take several days.
• Safety and Convenience: For tourists who may not be accustomed to the rugged terrain, flights offer a safer and more comfortable option to reach their starting points.
Challenges of Domestic Flights in Nepal
• Weather Dependency: Due to Nepal’s mountainous terrain and unpredictable weather, domestic flights are often delayed or canceled. Flights to Lukla, for instance, are highly dependent on clear weather.
• Airport Facilities: Some of the regional airports have basic infrastructure, and tourists should be prepared for delays and minimal facilities in remote locations.
Tourism, especially trekking, is a major contributor to Nepal’s economy, and domestic flights play a key role in facilitating access to these adventurous regions.
