From the foothills of the Himalaya, we wish you a very happy International Mountain Day! May we always remember to appreciate, maintain, admire the majestic peaks and the essence of the mountains.

The theme of this year's International Mountain Day (IMD) on 11 December will be sustainable mountain tourism.

Sustainable tourism in mountains can contribute to creating additional and alternative livelihood options and promoting poverty alleviation, social inclusion, as well as landscape and biodiversity conservation. It is a way to preserve the natural, cultural and spiritual heritage, to promote local crafts and high value products, and celebrate many traditional practices such as local festivals.

UK removes Nepal from red list

The Government of UK has removed 47 countries and territories including Nepal from its red list, which was in place earlier due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Issuing a notice on Thursday, the UK government stated that the provision will come into effect from October 11. With the new provision, passengers returning to England from Nepal will no longer be required to enter hotel quarantine, it is said.

Likewise, eligible travellers vaccinated in over 37 new countries and territories will also be treated the same as returning fully vaccinated UK residents, so long as they have not visited a red list country or territory in the 10 days before arriving in England.

The Government of UK has also stated that proof of vaccination of four vaccines (Oxford-AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen and Janssen) will be recognized from those 37 countries and territories.

Passengers travelling to the UK from Nepal should submit the proof of vaccination.

Pakistan has released new tourism rules that states Nepali mountaineers, trekkers and anyone who has been in Nepal 3 weeks prior will be barred from entering Pakistan. This effectively shuts down many expedition companies who rely heavily on Sherpa/Nepali leadership and labor.

Mingma G from Imagine, fresh off a failed no 02 attempt at Everest having only made the South Col, just announced another blow to his climbing plans by cancelling his summer K2 expedition. Other teams have already announced cancelations to their expeditions and treks as well.

It appears that the failure of Nepal and its government to prevent (or even acknowledge) the spread of COVID has caused other countries to take protective measures against them.
