Maha Shivaratri is celebrated in honour of the god Shiva. There is a Shivaratri in every luni-solar month of the Hindu calendar, but once a year in late winter & before the arrival of Summer, marks Maha Shivaratri which means "the Great Night of Shiva".

It is a major festival in Hinduism, this festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. The ardent devotees keep awake all night & smoke w**d as it is considered Shiva's favorite.

In Kashmir Shaivism, the festival is called Har-ratri by Shiva faithfuls of the Kashmir region.

The festival is a harbinger of longer and relatively warmer days in comparison to the cold month of Poush. Maghe Sankranti is similar to solstice festivals in other religious traditions. People celebrate the festival with goodies such as sesame seed laddus, molasses, ghee, sweet potatoes and yam.

Today is Chhath Parva in Nepal & in some parts of India. This festival is dedicated to the Sun & his wife Usha in order to thank them for bestowing the bounties of life on earth. Chhath does not involve any idol worship but includes holy bathing, fasting & abstaining from drinking water, standing in water for long periods of time, & offering prayer to the setting and rising sun.

Environmentalists claim that Chhath is the most eco-friendly Hindu festival.

Nepal is celebrating Tihar for 5 days - The festival of lights!!

Kaag Tihar (Day 1)
The first day of the festival is called Kaag Tihar. Crows & ravens are worshiped by offerings of sweets and dishes placed on the roofs of houses. The cawing of crows and ravens symbolizes sadness and grief in Hinduism, so devotees offer crows and ravens food to avert grief and death in their homes. Tihar represents the divine attachment between humans and other animals.

Kukur Tihar (Day 2) - Oct 18, 2017

The second day is called Kukur Tihar where people offer garlands, tika and delicious food to dogs and acknowledge the cherished relationship between humans and dogs.
Dogs occupy a special place in hindu mythology. The dogs are believed to guard everyone, and even the gates of hell.
