Day 5: Manang to Leader (4200 M)
As you depart from Manang and continue your journey towards Thorong La Pass, the altitude increases and the air becomes thinner, which may present some challenges. The trail ascends by almost 2000 meters, gradually taking you through Tenki and away from the Marshyangdi Valley.
As you continue along the Jarsang Khola Valley, you'll reach a place called Ledar, situated at an altitude of 4200 meters. By this point, you'll notice that the vegetation becomes sparser, and the landscape starts to exhibit more barren features. The high altitude and harsh conditions make it difficult for plants to thrive, resulting in a more arid and rugged environment.
It's important to acclimatize properly and take necessary precautions as you ascend to higher altitudes. Make sure to stay hydrated, maintain a steady pace, and listen to your body's signals to avoid altitude sickness. Following these guidelines will help ensure a safer and more enjoyable trek through the beautiful landscapes of the region.
Day 4 : Praken Gompa Acclimatization Hike from Manang
Praken Gompa is a Buddhist monastery located in the Manang district of Nepal, along the popular Annapurna Circuit Trek. It is situated on a hillside overlooking the town of Manang and the Marsyangdi River valley. It takes approx 1.5 hours to reach Gompa from Manang village which is nearly 4000 M from sea level.
Praken Gompa is an important stop for trekkers on the Annapurna Circuit, not only because of its religious and cultural significance but also because it provides an opportunity for acclimatization. Many trekkers spend a day or two at the Manang village and hike monastery to help their bodies adjust to the altitude before continuing on their journey.
The monastery itself is said to be over 500 years old and is home to a community of Buddhist monks. Recently a 75 years old female monk (Ani Chorten) is staying here, taking care of monasteries and takes part in daily worship from a couple of decades ago. It contains a main prayer hall, as well as smaller shrines and living quarters for the monks. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds and learn about the Buddhist traditions and practices observed at the monastery.
Overall, Praken Gompa is a fascinating and peaceful place to visit for those trekking in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Its location, history, cultural significance and a story of female monk ani chorten make it a must-see stop on the Annapurna Circuit Trek. One might get amazed with the story of monk Ani Chorten that she shared us about her life; where she was born, when she started learning buddhism, how she became a monk and her art of living can be a great inspiration for all human beings. It was great to know about her story and history of Gompa after visiting this place.
Great day, great experience.
