🐬 March is a big month for our marine life! Dolphin Awareness Month and are here - two incredible calendar events dedicated to celebrating and protecting the ocean and the amazing creatures that call it home.
Here in Aotearoa, we’re lucky to have the Hector’s dolphin - the rarest and smallest dolphin in the world. But with only around 15,000 left, they need our help more than ever.
At Black Cat, we’re passionate about protecting these special dolphins and the place they call home. That’s why we created the Protect Hector’s Membership, helping fund vital research and conservation efforts.
Forty years of whānau 🐬 Today we celebrated four incredible decades of Black Cat Cruises staff with our Past & Present Whānau Day!
On a perfect 25-degree Christchurch day, we cruised out from Lyttelton to stunning Quail Island for a classic Kiwi BBQ, reminiscing about the past, appreciating the present, and maybe even inspiring a few future crew members with all the kids running around.
A huge thank you to everyone who made it out – it really is the people who make this place what it is 🥰.
"He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata."
"What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people."
And what an extraordinary team we have, past and present! 🎉

🐬 ‘They circle around you!' - ‘ze zwemmen in rondjes om je heen!’
🇳🇿 Those were the words of the guide on the small boat. They echoed in my mind as I became surrounded by Hector’s dolphins - one with them and their home: the ocean!
The guide had found this group of the world’s rarest and smallest oceanic dolphins using nothing but his eyes and ears. No radar, no bait - just brains!
At a great distance, four others and I were allowed to enter the water. ‘If the dolphins are curious, they can come closer themselves’ said the guide.
So they did! Soon after, the dolphins began to circle around me. An experience from 2019 that will stay with me forever. It even inspired me to to successfully complete a master’s degree in tourism at the most sustainable university in my home country (Wageningen University, The Netherlands) at the end of last year.
Sharing my story here, hoping to inspire others too!

Cruise or swim with the smallest, rarest and friendliest dolphin in the world - the Hector’s dolphin! Eco-tourism pioneer Black Cat Cruises offers world-class visitor experiences including our 2-hour Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise and Swimming with the Dolphins tour. Located within the pictureque and French-inspired, seaside town of Akaroa; Only a scenic 90 minute drive from Christchurch, New Zealand.
Black Cat Cruises was established in 1985 by Ron and Durelle Bingham and grew out of their love of the harbour and its marine mammal inhabitants, particularly the Hector’s dolphin.
From Black Cat’s establishment, we have worked alongside and supported the NZ Whale and Dolphin Trust with their dolphin research in Akaroa Harbour. We continue to donate to Hector’s dolphin protection research with every ticket sold.
Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise
Your award-winning 2-hour harbour cruise is packed with stunning highlights including the endemic (only found in NZ) and playful Hector’s dolphin, as well as White-flippered Little Blue penguins, NZ Fur seals and abundant birdlife. You’ll see giant volcanic sea cliffs, view dramatic scenery and hear about Akaroa’s fascinating past. Cruises depart every day, weather permitting.
Swimming with Dolphins
Immerse yourself in a once-in-a-life experience in the only place on the planet where you can swim with the worlds smallest and rarest dolphin - the Hector’s dolphin, the beautiful sheltered setting of Akaroa Harbour in New Zealand’s South Island. Our tours are limited to only 12 swimmers per trip, so you’ll have more chances to come face to face with the dolphins. Very few experiences will be as rewarding as an encounter with wild dolphins in their natural habitat. Plus we swim with dolphins all year round!
With Black Cat Cruises enjoy an incredible nature experience out on the water, supported by experienced local crew and world-class facilities. Our experience and dedication to our local environment delivers a New Zealand ‘must do’ activity here in Akaroa.
We are proud to follow the Marine Mammal Protection Act 1978 and the Marine Mammal Protection Regulations 1992. These ensure the marine mammals of New Zealand are protected and that their conservation is a top priority. Our interactions with marine mammals adhere to all regulations and our conservation focused tours, educate and raise awareness.
