Akitio Glen Ora Walk

Akitio Glen Ora Walk This two or four day New Zealand private walk runs between two sheep and beef stations.

Each property is rich in history and different in landscape and provides a memorable walking experience for all.

Teepee building has been a happy pass time at the beach.
The new limestone rock wall at the river mouth is looking great.

Interesting flower and seed pods on the Lancewood

Guess what time of day? Sue found the bush walk just "magic"

19/10/2015

It couldn't have been better conditions for walking, talking and having fun. These good friends get together on an annual basis and it was a pleasure to have them on the Akitio Glen Ora Walk.

Its not the usual shot of the sandspit but with all the rain its not surprising the river looks like chocolate sauce. We have had around 120ml of rain which is a godsend at this time of year as it was looking very dry.

22/07/2015

Its not often snow settles on the beach at Akitio.

22/07/2015

The freezing southerly that swept up the East coast left its mark on both Glenora and Akitio Stations.

28/04/2015

This Lorikeet was also spotted on Glenora.

01/04/2015

This little spotted owl was seen out by Franklins Hut on Glenora

Karaka trees on the coast continue to grow despite the most tortured looking trunks. The long grass around them is now a real fire hazard.

Recently England was in the news legalising the use of 3 individual sets of genetic material in an embryo. This reminded me of the DNA double helix. Maurice Wilkins, was born in Pongaroa, 30km from Akitio. The research both he and a colleague achieved allowed Watson and Crick to deduce the structure DNA. All three men were awarded the Noble Prize in 1962.
Check out the memorial in Pongaroa.

Poor Frecks. Collecting honey from the bee hives can be (?) a very hazardous business

22/01/2015

Frecks and I were checking the markers on the Glen Ora walk. The photo is of the old boiler that when fired up, the steam drove the belts for the saw that cut the timber. The wood was then carted out to the front of the property by ox and cart. It was thought that the boiler (which was on wheels) operated in the early 1900s but we don't know exactly when. Does anyone have any idea? We would be very interested in any feedback please?

Shearing time

14/01/2015

The bee season is officially over at Akitio.

06/01/2015

While the bees are flat out working some are relaxing by the sea.
The Manuka season is coming to an end so the bees will be trucked out soon.

31/12/2014

Tis the season to "bee" happy. The Manuka is in full flower at Akitio at the moment. After a slow start the bees are now doing very well - so the bee keepers tell me!

16/12/2014

Another Akitio photograph from Glen Howey. These are the remnants of the old jetty.

11/12/2014

Alot of people are familiar with the driftwood on Akitio beach. This shot by Glen Howey, reminds me of a moose!

07/12/2014

I love seeing these ferns establishing themselves on trees.

25/11/2014

Some feedback please?? "They" say that the lancewood has an immature growth stage (long serrated leaves) which change into a different mature stage (shorter leaves and bushy growth habit) in order to stop the Moa eating it. The immature form was supposed to be unpalatable to the Moa. Once achieving a certain height the mature, and supposedly palatable form emerged.
True or False? Any ideas anyone?????

25/11/2014

Frecks and I were doing some track maintenance and saw this flowering clematis

27/10/2014

The long weekend was cool and windy and we are dressed for the winter but we had a great picnic at Franklins lake at the back of Glen Ora

27/10/2014

Firstly this is not a crop grown at Akitio but an example of the fantastic colour around at this time of year. The spring has been kind to us and the grass growth prolific.

21/09/2014

This little guy was found in the bush on the walk.

03/06/2014

Fabulous sky at Akitio early in the morning

24/04/2014

The Longest Place Name is a hop step and a jump from the Walk.
Good luck pronouncing it

21/04/2014

We've had nearly half our annual rainfall so you just know you're going to get your boots wet. Most of us had cell phones in our back pockets so we were ultra careful crossing these creeks.

14/04/2014

Its along time since we've been able to enjoy a panoramic view such as this. Surely its going to stop raining soon!!

13/04/2014

Well the tough jobs are all but over and the walk has gone into hiberation.

21/02/2014

Its been so hot lately that the Bush Walks have been very popular

11/02/2014

News flash: For those who want to walk but are not keen on the kennels to leave their pet in, we have in Havelock North The Fairy Dogmother. Take your pooch to her home and she'll look after it. Contact Jill on [email protected]
She even looks after dogs on a daily basis!

21/01/2014

A gloomy day here on at Akitio Glenora Walk. On a positive note I'm pleased to say we are all ok after the 6.3 earthquake. I've been living at Akitio for 35yrs and this was the worst earthquake I've experienced. Nothing broke, the power remained on, only the paintings on the wall askew and the three guys painting the woolshed roof are all in one piece! I think I should go and buy a lotto ticket. I feel my luck is running high!!

14/01/2014

Steve Dye, from Auckland and his nephew Devin, begin one one section of the Akitio Glenora Walk. Steve was the lucky winner of the Facebook competition.

14/01/2014

James Falloon and 20 other riders doing the Cape to Cape. They rode from Cape Palliser to Cape Turnagain. There aren't just "walkers" on the track. Next there'll be mountain bikes!
