Recently, Aotearoa/New Zealand celebrated Matariki, the Maori New Year. Matakana Village’s (1 hour north of Auckland) second annual Matariki Market shone brightly on Matariki public holiday Friday 28 June. Our daughter Danica Matariki Sperath (her middle name is Matariki because she was born at Matariki 15 years ago) offered facepainting for the kids and was a real hit with them! What a delight to recently be able to visit "The Beehive" in Wellington, our capital. This is the name usually given to the Executive Wing of New Zealand Parliament Buildings in Wellington. It is called "The Beehive" because of its shape! It is registered as a Category I heritage building by Heritage New Zealand. This photo shows our Co-Founder & Co-Director Neill Sperath at the lectern where usually our Prime Minister stands during press conferences, so that was fun!

She gives us a lot of joy and ALWAYS loves a walk, food and her favourite, a belly scratch! This photo was taken using an unusual perspective from below. 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝: a few months ago we were busy harvesting LOTS of grapes here at our home in Auckland - see photo. We grow our Grapes along a fence using a process called espalier. Espalier is a horticultural term that refers to training and pruning a tree or shrub to grow flat and vertically against a wall, fence, trellis, or other supporting structure. Did you that many Grapes freeze really well? We prepared our Grapes, placed them in freezer bags and are now eating them as snacks through winter after dinner or whenever we feel like eating some. They're a delicious and healthy snack!

In the southern Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island lies the largest Totara tree in New Zealand, a national treasure estimated to be about 1,800 years old. Totara are the largest Podocarp trees. These are a species of large conifer tree that have cones and also fruit. Podocarp actually means "foot fruit". The meaning of this is that these trees' seeds grow at the foot of the fruit instead of inside of it like many other fruits. An amazing place to see is named Pouakani, a tree that is 42.7 m tall and has an estimated wood volume of 203.7 m3. Pouakani is one of the most amazing places in NZ and very few people are even aware of its existence!

We recently saw a beautiful native bird, a Fantail (Piwakawaka in Maori) and took this lovely image. The fantail is one of the few native bird species in New Zealand that has been able to adapt to an environment greatly altered by humans. Originally a bird of open native forests and scrub, it is now also found in exotic plantation forests, in orchards and in gardens. At times, fantails may appear far from any large stands of shrubs or trees, and it has an altitudinal range that extends from sea level to the snow line.

Cats, rats, stoats and mynas are as great an enemy to fantails as they are to other native birds. Of all the eggs and chicks fantails produce, only a few survive and grow up.
However, the secret to fantails’ relative success compared to other native birds is their ability to produce lots of young. Some chicks are therefore likely to escape predation and populations can bounce back quickly after a decline.
