This week Island Aviation reached 10 years since starting operations and we were looking back on some of the highlights.

In November 2013 we launched our seaplane service from Wynyard Quarter. Chris our CEO had wondered a couple years earlier, why in a large and protected harbour there were no seaplanes in contrast to other cities like Sydney or Vancouver. So we set out to re-establishing the Auckland Harbour Aerodrome - in the place of New Zealand's first international airport- and after a gap of 23 years seaplanes were taken off again from the Waitemata after a karakia of our aircraft by Ngati Whatua Orakei.

Our little start-up continued to grow quite successfully and in 2017 we won the New Zealand Tourism Industry Award for Business Excellence. In the same year we were a finalist for the "meaningful travel award” in Sydney" against one of the largest names in International travel.

In 2019 and 2021 we were recognised as finalists in the 100% Pure New Zealand Experience Awards and we managed to make it through the difficult days of Covid and changes to the Auckland waterfront, where we lost our seaplane base.

We now operate a single- and twin-engine fleet, which is used for multiple daily flights to Aotea/ Great Barrier, scenic flights from Waiheke and North Shore Airports and transfers around the North Island. Our "all- window seat" fleet provides unrivalled views of the Hauraki Gulf and the Auckland region and the best opportunity to spot the diverse boating action and marine life.

The pictures shows some of the awards our company has won and the milestones we achieved, including as the first ISO-certified carbon-zero airline in New Zealand back in 2017. This year we held our first planting day, which led to us starting a partnership with island based nurseries to pay for plants for local reforestation and wetland restoration.

The look back to our start also shows how time has passed, children grown-up and black hair turned to grey-white 😉

Briton-Norman is taking a giant leap towards environmental sustainability with a groundbreaking initiative and we are thrilled to share a sneak peek of our Britten Norman Islander aircraft converted to hydrogen power🛫 🚀

While we're still working on the final business case for this conversion, our CEO, Chris, has been on a mission for the past two weeks in the US and Europe, exploring low/zero emission transportation alternatives 🌍

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the remarkable teams at and for their dedicated efforts in shaping the specifications and designing our iconic Islander Aircraft, which stands as the premier choice for island travel globally, surpassing all its competitors.

This initiative would make Aviation the second operator in New Zealand to embrace hydrogen power, following in the footsteps of our national carrier, who has reportedly shown interest in conversion kits for future Islander aircraft. If the development stays on track, we anticipate seeing these eco-friendly aircraft on routes to and by 2026/2027.

In the interim, we've also upgraded the avionics equipment in our existing fleet, making the transition to zero-emission fuels even smoother. 🌟
