Our Walking in Japan group had a picture-perfect Day at Miyajima Island yesterday!

Starting with a peaceful train ride to Miyajimaguichi Station. The journey to the ropeway was filled with stunning autumn colors. From the top, they enjoyed panoramic views of the bay and inland sea. Some then hiked to the summit of Mt Misen, while others took the scenic route down.

Before catching the ferry back, they captured countless photos of the Great Torii Gate, glowing vermillion against the clear blue sky. They ended the day with a delicious Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) dinner in Hiroshima. A truly memorable experience!

Our Walking in Japan group have had a busy weekend exploring...

Mandy secured high-speed boat tickets for the group, and they zoomed across to Naoshima Island on a small hydrofoil. Here they explored the Art House Project in Honmura, with its unique installations in old houses. Despite the weather turning, they enjoyed the Benesse House Museum and Chichu Art Museum, especially the Monet experience. After a day of art and adventure, they returned to Takamatsu for a delicious dinner at Mikayla.

The next day, they visited the Shikoku Village Museum and traveled to Matsuyama, where they explored the 400-year-old Matsuyama Castle and the Dogo Onsen area. They ended the day with a happy hour at a local pub.

Their nature walk in the mountains showcased stunning autumn leaves. Some of them took a break on the bus, while others continued to Temple 44.

They then traveled to Hiroshima, visiting the Peace Park and Memorial Museum, reflecting on the events of the past. Another memorable day on this active tour!

What have our walking in Japan group been up to???

They made it to the start of the 88 Temples Pilgrim Walk!
Exploring Tokushima's temples was a journey through history and beauty for the group. They started at Temple 1, a serene spot with a lantern-adorned main hall. A short walk took them to Temple 2, where an ancient tree stood majestically. The final temple, a 37-minute walk away, boasted intricate carvings, including a stunning bronze dragon. After navigating back to Itano station, they headed to Takamatsu. Their hotel offered stunning city views, and a stroll through the Central Shopping Area was delightful. The day ended with a hearty dinner as the sun set quickly.

Day 11 in Takamatsu began with a visit to the breathtaking Ritsurin Gardens, showcasing 400 years of Japanese garden artistry. Some ventured to Yashima (Temple 84), enjoying the climb and the panoramic views despite the light rain. The evening was spent at the Astro Bar, with its mesmerizing city and port views, followed by dinner with plenty of restaurant recommendations from their explorations.

Its a busy active tour for sure! 🌸🚶‍♂️🏯

Our Walking in Japan group have had an active last few days from visiting Mt Koya, with lots of walking and then a chance to relax in an Onsen....

The group left Japan's first capital for the Kii Peninsula, traveling impressive highways and mountain roads to reach Mt. Koya. They arrived on a special day when parts of the main temple were open. After a quick lunch, they enjoyed a scenic walk among Koyasan's historic buildings and visited the main temple, Kondo.

In the afternoon, they took a private coach to Kawayu Onsen, where they relaxed in hot springs. Dinner at the hotel featured everyone in Yukata, looking splendid in muted green.

The following day the group began their 8km walk on the historic Kumano Kodo trail, once traveled by Emperors and Samurai. Highlights of the day included moments of quiet relaxation in the forest and a communal lunch of Bento boxes.

The path took them through diverse landscapes, including sleepy villages, forests of cypress and cedar, bamboo groves, and tea plantations. Despite the short distance, they walked slowly, making many stops to take in the sights.

The journey concluded at the Kumano Temple Complex, home to the tallest torii in the world. Here, both groups reunited, and Mandy brought a wooden tablet for everyone to sign, receiving a blessing of Good Health for all.

Our Walking in Japan group had a fun day at Nara Deer Park yesterday.

The group, ever efficient, arrived early at the train station, Suica cards ready. They journeyed past towns, villages, and fields and it felt like stepping back in time. Nara, the first capital of Japan, welcomed them with its historic charm.
They headed to the park, home to hundreds of tame deer, descendants of the sacred deer from 700 AD. They visited the world's largest bronze Buddha and marveled at its grandeur.
Their adventure continued with a walk through the Primeval Forest, untouched since 841 AD. They climbed Mt. Kasuga, enjoying the autumn leaves and the diverse flora and fauna.
After a day full of exploration, they returned to Nara for a well-deserved dinner.
They sure are packing lots into this tour!

What have our Walking in Japan group been up to since?

They kicked off the day with some sightseeing, soaking in the local wonders. By afternoon, they transformed into eager students, diving into Origami and Calligraphy classes. The day wrapped up with a delightful traditional Japanese meal, complete with mesmerizing entertainment from Geisha. What a perfect blend of culture and fun!

Our Walking in Japan group have now left Tokyo. They took the bullet train to Kyoto and what an experience that was... a few hiccups on the way as someone got on the wrong train!!
But they all reunited and once in Kyoto took the bus to The Philosopher’s Walk. A delightful walk by a small stream, with many bridges, and lots of trees turning to Autumn colours, and lots of lovely houses and temples.
And what better way to finish off the day than dinner and drinks in an Irish Pub of all places!!
What adventures will tomorrow bring??

Our Walking in Japan Tour group flew out of NZ on Saturday and had the day in Tokyo yesterday. The day was spent sightseeing with a local guide and they got to enjoy a panoramic view of Japan’s capital from Tokyo Skytree’s observation deck!

Today they will board the bullet train and will be whisked across the country westward to Kyoto.
