Today we were blessed with the presence of world renowned Opera Singer, Katerina Karneus, who along with her husband and a beautiful family from Singapore, enjoyed a magnificent day on Waiheke, with stunning scenery, sampling world class wines and hospitality at Casita Miro, The Batch and Mudbrick, followed by a sensational lunch at the Oyster Inn. A day in Paradise.

We just wanted to share this information received today! A new season's wine is always exciting to contemplate :)

2021 Vintage Report from
Winemaker Randal Peart - Kennedy Point Vineyard

I feel so lucky to have had three good vintages in a row. I came to Waiheke in 2016 and I was told how difficult 2015 was…in hindsight, compared to ’16, ’17 and ’18 it was a walk in the park. If you are a long term KP customer, you will know our wines are always full of character. Difficult vintages increase the character of wines. What you get in ‘good vintages’ is character plus beautiful fruit, plus structure and generosity which is a plus plus.

2021 was a long harvest. We picked our Reserve Chardonnay from Oakura Bay in mid-February and our last pick was at the end of March. The growing season was an average length but without a proper Winter the vines started growing much earlier than ever before. Vines need a cold winter. Also, there was a little rain mid-March which made our picker’s jobs much harder and we had to be a bit more selective with the fruit.

I think 2021 will be referred to as the Merlot year. It really out-performed everything else. This is the confluence of all the factors out there in nature promoting Merlot above the pack. This pack is a very high quality one though. 2021 wines will be full of fruit and have a nice acid too. Tannins will be pared back in comparison to 2020 but still firm. The wines will have a beautiful balance to them.
