Once the travel bug bites there is no known antidote, and I know that I shall be happily infected until the end of my life – Michael Palin

My travel career began in 1989. Since then I have spent time in wholesale and retail travel, organising groups and special event travel, as well as representing a niche tour operator specialising in small group adventure travel gives me a sound back ground for

helping to take you where you want to go. Some things are just meant to be. With intermediate and college aged children the time was right to achieve the work/life balance that I craved for many years. My kids are now grown up and pursuing their own chosen careers - travel is such a passion, it becomes a part of who you are. If you want someone looking after your arrangements who genuinely has your best interests at heart then contact me

🇺🇸 THE US IS OPEN 🇺🇸

Typically Handlery Union Square’s Jon Handlery and Citadel Outlets shopping queen Cynthia Schmitt Easey are together this time of year visiting Kiwi agents.

As fate would have it, the pair are both are in SFO this week and want to let those in the Kiwi trade know that:

1. We are ready to have you visit.
2. We are already working on our video presentations to make you laugh and be inspired.
3. We are learning again how to pass out our brochures and talk to people without masks.

“Things change but remain the same,” says Cynthia. “The pandemic may have changed us, but we remain faithful to our core business.”

One thing the NZ Travel Brokers support team does not lack is travel industry experience. A quick tot up, at a gathering in Palmerston North last week, added up to 248 years and an average of 31 years across the team of 8.

After having reduced from 16 to 8 during COVID, mercifully with no redundancies, the directors made the strategic decision earlier this year to move the team back to full time and full salary, despite the ongoing uncertainty, to ensure no more expertise was lost and a solid base existed from which to rebuild.

“It is also giving us the opportunity to improve processes and systems and work through our strategic planning thoroughly” says Guy Flynn.

As the market has started to rebound around the world, the most critical issue for Travel Advisors overseas currently is a lack of experienced staff, such is the massive volume of the pent-up demand. “That seems a long way off here in NZ but we will be ready” says Guy.

If borders were completely open what destination would you explore? Pre Covid I had my 50th birthday booked for Vegas and a road trip down the West Coast of America - we can’t wait to put this holiday back in place … what’s on your wish list?

The IATA Travel Pass is due for release in the next week or two. Originally it was designed to facilitate passenger screening at the airport but it has been enhanced to include such things as Covid test results and vaccine certificates which will assist immigration officers on arrival.

Just had to share 💝

😂😂😂

THESE ARE ACTUAL COMPLAINTS RECEIVED BY "THOMAS COOK VACATIONS" FROM DISSATISFIED CUSTOMERS:

1. "They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax."

2. "On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don't like spicy food."

3. "We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish."

4. "We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price."

5. "The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room."

6. "We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white but it was more yellow."

7. "It's lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallartato close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during 'siesta' time -- this should be banned."

8. "No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared."

9. "Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers."

10. "I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts."

11. "The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun."

12. "It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair."

13. "I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends' three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller."

14. "The brochure stated: 'No hairdressers at the resort.' We're trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service."

15. "When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners."

16. "We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning."

17. "It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel."

18. "I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes."

19. "My fiancée and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked."

Welcome back Rarotonga 💝💝

I have a favour to ask of you all. If you're planning to book a holiday, please consider using your local travel agent. It's been a rough year for many people, particularly for those in the travel industry, with many not being able to continue on in their careers. Travel agents & brokers have worked tirelessly over the last 12 months obtaining refunds & credits for their customers, with very little financial gain, if any, to themselves. This travel bubble is a huge step in the right direction for the industry to start getting back on it's feet. So, please, don't click click online with some faceless website that's not even based in NZ - sit down with a good book, movie, glass of wine, cup of tea - whatever floats your boat - and let your travel expert do all the hard work for you, including guiding you through all the Do's & Don't of travel within a Covid World. Please also remember that many travel experts have had to take secondary jobs to get themselves through, so if they don't reply to you immediately, please give them a chance to get back to you. Cheers to all my travel industry friends for this wonderful and long awaited news 🍷

🌴 GOVTS AIM FOR MAY BUBBLE TRAVEL 🌴

Despite the hype, again the government has not announced any travel bubble start dates.

The Pime Ministers of New Zealand and the Cook Islands have this afternoon confirmed that they are working in earnest towards a May start date for the opening of quarantine-free travel between both countries.
