Have you ever been to the longest place name in the world? We have!

"Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauo tamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronuku pokaiwhenuakitanatahu"

Named after Tamatea, who was a legendary Maori explorer who traversed across the vast lands of New Zealand.

To honor his exploits, the Maori people named a hill after him, and to show their true adoration, they used an entire sentence.

This unique place name has 85 characters and translates literally to "the summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one."

Isn't that awesome? And the roads that lead there are a delight.

And just when you thought it was all over Rover - we've still got a few days of this tour up our sleeves. With another beautiful smooth Cook Strait crossing under our belts we've arrived back on the North Island.

The riders really enjoyed the spirited ride up the winding Rimutaka Hill Rd which led to tonight's destination, the delightful little town of Martinborough in the heart of the Wairarapa Wine Region.

Our hotel tonight is a beautifully restored historic hotel with just the right amount of old style comfort and luxury.

Today we bid goodbye to the Wild West Coast and rode through the picturesque Lower Buller Gorge to Lewis Pass, the most northern mountain pass through NZ’s Southern Alps.

This is a wild & rugged ride, where the sheer walls of the gorge rise above the river, through windswept native beech forests, alpine passes and alongside wide gravel laden river beds. This is a beautiful and unspoilt region where remnants of the gold rush of the 1860’s are still to be found.

A helicopter ride over not one but two Glaciers was a definite highlight of our day today.

Then it was back on the road and despite a little inclement weather the scenary along the west coast didn't disappoint.

Lush rainforests and a rocky coastline made for some spectacular riding. Our day finishing in the small coastal settlement of Punakaiki where mother nature has carved out incredible rock formations - like layers of pancakes.

Today we were joined by 6 new riders for the last leg of our Twin Island adventure. Heading north, our first day on the road took us through the spectacular scenary of Haast Pass past the majestic alpine lakes of Hawea and Wanaka to the wild and windswept West Coast.

Here the road winds its way through golden tussock covered hills & steep mountains cloaked in lush rainforest & vibrant blue tumbling rivers. This route was a traditional pathway for Maori journeying west in search of pounamu (greenstone or jade). It’s a fantastic journey through primordial forests ending when you finally reach the foaming surf of the Tasman Sea on the West Coast.

Tonight we stay in luxury chalets surrounded by lush rainforest with views of Franz Josef Glacier above us. It's a little slice of heaven and another brilliant day.

The road upto the mountain plateau winds though a canopy of native forest and as we reached the top the sky cleared and Mt Taranaki appeared in all it's glory, with just a tiny amount of winter snow still visible . The views here are spectacular and we even caught a glimpse of Mt Ruapehu in the distance.

We're out enjoying the roads less travelled. As many of our clients have often remarked - each day on this trip just keeps getting better and better.

Our ride today followed the quiet back country roads that wind through the Pureora Forest Park towards the west coast of the North Island. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with native beech forest, clear rivers and verdant grasslands. And a road just made for riding!

Our afternoon was well spent cruising the gentle roads of the Waikato Plains. A perfect start to our NZ adventure.
