🎅🦌 Santa’s helpers are hard at work ensuring freight is delivered to local communities via our Cessna Grand Caravan planes.
We operate several freight flights weekly to and from Great Barrier Island, Kaitaia and Auckland.
✈️ Flying with us this summer? Check out these travel tips from the team.
1️⃣ Give yourself plenty of travel time to the airport to allow for traffic delays.
2️⃣ Pre-book your airport car park or ask a friend or family member to drop you off.
3️⃣ Know your baggage limit. If you’re travelling with us with an infant stroller or a car seat, this is accounted for in your personal luggage. Our aircraft carry strict baggage weight limitations.
4️⃣ Pre-book oversized items:
Travelling with a surfboard, bike or other oversized luggage? We can only carry a limited number of large items on each flight, so pre-book them by calling us ahead of time on 0800 900 600.
5️⃣ Unaccompanied minors:
If your child is travelling as an unaccompanied minor, please bring a printout of your child’s paperwork to help speed up check-in. Plus, ensure the parent or guardian dropping off and picking up the unaccompanied minor brings ID, as this must be shown when checking in and collecting a minor.

LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: We’re excited to share a new series highlighting some of our fav businesses in Great Barrier Island, Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Tauranga, Whitianga & Auckland.
This month, we caught up with Jacki and Rogan Polkinghorne, owners of Kaitaia Fire Ltd.
🌶️ Q: Tell us about Kaitaia Fire?
A: Kaitaia Fire Ltd. was established in 1989 on a five-acre farm at Lake Ohia in New Zealand’s winterless Far North. From those humble beginnings, we now export sauce all around the world, and produce a range of “hot” products for the domestic market. Our sauces have won many food awards in both New Zealand and the US.
We’ve kept the business in the family and took over the company a few years ago from my (Jacki) stepdad, Garry, who originally started it.
🌶️ Q: How is Kaitaia Fire sauce made?
A: When the chillies are at the height of their maturity, and the red colour is at its most intense, they’re picked. After being finely milled and mixed with organic sea salt, the chillies are sealed in barrels to undergo a quasi-fermentation process over the next few years. This process removes all the sugars in the fruit and releases the volatile oils locked up in the pepper’s cell walls.
When the resulting mash has reached its optimum level of maturity, it’s transported to Auckland, mixed to an ancient Mayan recipe, and bottled.
🌶️ Q: What’s your most popular product?
A: The red Kaitaia Fire is the iconic brand; however, the Waha Wera (Habernero and Kiwifruit) has a cult following - once people try it, they are hooked!
🌶️ Q: What do you love most about living and working in Kaitaia?
A: Supporting local - we have local growers dotted around the far north. The first half of the process is done in Lake Ohia, and then barrels are shipped to our small factory in Auckland for the final step.
🌶️ Q: What are three must-dos when visiting Kaitaia?
A: The Kaitaia Markets are a must on a Saturday! Beach trips - either coast, there is always somewhere with great weather. You can't beat an ice cream from the fish and chip shop in Ahipara.
🌶️ Q: What's your top travel tip?
A: Take your time! There is so much to see and do around the region with lots of hidden pockets of incredible locations.

Escape to Great Barrier Island for a summer of fun - just 30 minutes from Auckland. ✈️☀️
Relax at one of the island’s stunning beaches, catch some waves, or enjoy local biking and hiking trails. Plus, we can’t forget the island’s incredible dark sky stargazing experience, fishing and golfing.
There’s over 60 flights to and from the island from either Auckland Airport or North Shore Airport to catch each week.
👋 We’re sad to be farewelling our Ops Manager/Chief Pilot, Matty C. (right), seen here at Auckland Airport with pilot Steve. Matt has been an integral part of our team since 2017, bringing a keen eye for detail to the maintenance and upkeep of our fleet, ensuring safe operations and reliable aircraft.
We wish you all the best and lots of tail winds on your next adventure, Matty C! You will be missed.
Our team of pilots are all highly trained and experienced. Before joining Barrier Air, they're required to have a total of 1,200 hours of flying experience so they can capably fly our fleet of Cessna Grand Caravans.

LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: We’re excited to share a new series highlighting businesses in Great Barrier Island, Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Tauranga, Whitianga & Auckland.
This month, we caught up with Jade Carson from Auckland’s Platter me up.
Here at Barrier Air, we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy Jade’s delicious platters at a few of our staff events.
🍇 Q: Tell us about Platter Me Up?
A: Platter Me Up is a local Auckland catering business specialising in grazing boxes and tables. We started in 2022 after a lady on a local page asked for platters. I had done some in the past, so I decided to give it a go. My friends and family then suggested starting a business out of it - so here we are today!
🍇 Q: What is your role at Platter Me Up?
A: I’m the owner, platter creator, social media manager, and everything in between that keeps the business running and growing.
🍇 Q: What is your most popular platter box or board?
A: Our larger platter box. It’s the perfect mix of sweet and savoury. Meats, cheeses, crackers, fruit, veggies and sweet treats!
🍇 Q: What do you love about Auckland?
A: I love working and living in Auckland, as there is so much to see and do. Everything you need is right here.
🍇 Q: What is a must-do for someone visiting Auckland?
A: Order a platter from Platter Me Up and drive out to Muriwai or Piha Beach to watch the sunset on the beach.
🍇 Q: What's your top travel tip?
A: My top tip after just coming back from six weeks in Europe would be to make sure you take a big portable charger. It was a game-changer!
