Nau mai haere mai to Kohutapu Lodge.

Kai (food) plays a big part in this cultural experience and it's something that every traveller both loves and remembers from their Haka tour!

Lucky guests get to experience a hangi, a traditional Māori method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven, called an umu. This technique ensures smoky, earthy flavours from the juicy meats and vegetables as they are cooked beneath the ground.

A hangi is an interactive, social experience, where guests can see the food being set on hot rocks in an earthen pit before being covered with wet sacks and dirt. The menu at Kohutapu Lodge includes lamb, chicken and pork for meat eaters, with root vegetables such as potatoes, kumara and pumpkin alongside salads, condiments and traditional kiwi deserts, with further vegetarian options.

The hangi takes up to 3 hours to cook...trust us when we say it is worth every minute and that you won't go hungry!

Kohutapu Lodge is included in every North Island inclusive Haka tour.

Looking for a truly once in a lifetime experience? A glacier heli-hike is a pretty extraordinary thing to do, and something you'll probably only participate in once. So, why not do it in Franz Josef? 🧊❄🏔

Franz Josef Glacier is the fastest moving, commercially guided glacier on the planet. Which means its features are ever changing - so each guided hike is totally unique. Adventurers get to explore dramatic glacier terrain, whilst they're kitted out in all the specialist gear, whilst under the guidance of an experienced and highly knowledgeable professional.

With its magnificent ice structures, seracs, crevasses and sometimes, ice caves - the Franz Josef Glacier / Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere - is yet another landscape in Aotearoa that feels quite out of this world.

We visit Franz Josef, on the West Coast, in all itineraries that include the South Island. Please note a a reasonable level of fitness and agility is required, and this add-on activity is weather dependent.

Hiking the Tongariro Crossing can, at times, feel like you're 'walking on the moon!' 🥾🌕

Located in New Zealand's oldest National Park and at just over 20km in length, it's a hike that offers astonishing views of volcanic peaks, red Mars-like craters and the emerald and blue lakes. Tongariro National Park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site with dual status that recognises not only the outstanding landscape, but also the spiritual and cultural significance the landscape holds for local Māori.

For Lord of the Rings fans the Tongariro Crossing delivers on an extra layer of excitement as this region is the cinematic double for the menacing Mordor and surrounding lands. As well as Mordor and Mt Doom, Tongariro National Park features in scenes depicting the jagged rocks of Emyn Muil and Black Gate. Two of Gollum’s fishing spots are also to be found here: the beautiful Tawhai Falls and the magnificent Mangawhero Falls that tumble over the edge of ancient lava flow –“the rock and pool, is nice and cool.”.

The Tongariro Crossing is, justifiably, known as one of the world’s best day-hikes and all our North Island itineraries allow time for guests to do this hike whilst in Taupō as an activity add on. The weather can change dramatically and quickly in this region, so prepare to encounter all conditions with adequate warm clothing layers, sunscreen, good footwear, energy-giving snacks and lots of water.

Please note a good level of fitness is recommended to do this hike, our guides can discuss your ability levels and provide recommendations.

Did you know that around 70% of our guests are solo travellers?

Our tours are perfect for individuals who are travelling by themselves and are looking to jump on an organised adventure and meet like-minded people! It's the perfect way to create life-long memories with new-found friendships. What's more, you can be as sociable as you like - it's entirely up to you.

Of course, we do have small groups of 2 or 3 join us on tours. We tend to have more solo travellers on our adventure tours and slightly more couples (not necessarily of the romantic kind!) join us on our Haka Plus tours.

Feeling nervous about joining a tour solo? Don't be! Reach out to our friendly team today and we can tell you a little bit more about what you can expect whilst travelling Aotearoa New Zealand with Haka Tours.

There is an abundance of water activities you can participate in whilst on one of our Haka Tours in New Zealand - from kayaking, jet boats, canyoning and white-water rafting to boat cruises and natural hot springs.

Adventurers can choose from adrenaline or relaxation, with half a day to full day options. From a sprinkle of water to a soak or a full-on dunk 💧🌊

For those looking for an adrenaline-pumping adventure, you can navigate the iconic Kaituna River on a whitewater rafting excursion with up in Rotorua. Here are some snaps of Haka folk who visited whilst on their Amplified Tour.

Some say there's nothing more refreshing than an unexpected raft flip! We tend to agree!

Welcome to Kohutapu Lodge and Te Puia, both located in/near Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island. They are, in our opinion, an absolute must do whilst visiting Aotearoa New Zealand!

Kohutapu Lodge facilitates guided walking tours in one of the world's last remaining Jurassic Podocarp Native Rainforests, and historical cultural tours of the land. They teach traditional Māori activities - weaving, haka lessons, night time eel fishing and more.

Te Puia is home to the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, Pōhutu Geyser. It is also home to the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, an educational centre which trains the next generation of artists from around the country.

These are excellent educational experiences, which provide a great overview of the Māori culture. They’re interactive, informative and our customers/all manuhiri (visitors) especially love the cultural performance and the traditional Hāngī dinner buffets at Kohutapu Lodge! The geothermal activity at Te Puia is simply mesmerising.

We include a visit to both Te Puia and Kohutapu Lodge on our North Island itineraries.

- Aroha mai, we are resharing this post as we posted incorrect information about these fantastic operators last week. Please check out https://kohutapulodge.co.nz/ and https://www.tepuia.com/ for more information about the brilliant experiences they offer.

Driving along the incredible coastal road and exploring the lush West Coast forests, it almost feels like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s a rare treat to experience such remote prehistoric landscapes.

Punakaiki's limestone pancake rocks, featured here, were developed over 30 million years ago 🤯 We love showing our guests New Zealand's West Coast, it's a very special place, with landscapes that look different every single day.

What's the pace of life like when you're on one of our tours? Well, it depends what style of tour you're on. Our Adventure and Haka Plus tours are quite different from one another.

Our Adventure tours tend to offer one-night stays in most locations, with a few two-night stays. The rhythm on the road when on one of our Adventure tours is quite energetic. Haka Plus tours generally offers two-night stays in most locations, providing more of a relaxed pace.

Some places you may stay two nights on tour include Paihia. Rotorua, Taupō, Queenstown, Wanaka, Franz Josef, Punakaiki, Christchurch and Abel Tasman National Park. However, this depends on which tour you're on. You can find out more about the differences between our tour types here - https://hakatours.com/adventure-vs-haka-plus/
