NEW COLOUR / Achieve a white weatherboard while still experiencing Vulcan timber’s unique grain and texture, with our plant-based Protector coating in White.
To begin with Vulcan timber’s thermally modified brown colour will be present, but will silver off on exposure to the elements to reveal more of the white hue of the Protector coating.
You can see this process in action in our Watch Me Weather video here.
Watch our Vulcan Cladding in Protector - Natural weather outside in an 18 month time-lapse video. We placed the weatherboards directly under the harsh New Zealand conditions, exposing them to all sorts of weather so you get an idea how the colour changes to help with your selection.
All Protector water borne stains will need to be reapplied every 2-4 years to maintain their colour, but also to help nourish and protect the Abodo exterior timber over time.
Iron Vitriol is a dark wood finish simulating an ancient Scandinavian timber treatment method. Watch how this iron surface-based treatment reacts quickly on Vulcan Cladding to take on an impressive dark brown black hue, developing over 8-10 months to a aged weathered aesthetic - suitable in urban or rural settings.
Could Iron Vitriol on Vulcan timber make an impact on your next project?

TIMBER TESTING / How do you determine the durability of timbers?
TIMBER TESTING / How do you determine the durability of timbers? The short answer is that it takes time and requires the comparison of an array of timber species - thermally modified as well as not. That’s what we have been doing over 7-8 years on “decay racks” at our Mangere, Auckland HQ. Watch to gain insight into how they work.
Side note: These decay racks are third party audited 💪
Darren from Texel Wood says it best...“Abodo is the greatest exterior wood on the planet.” He shares real-world proof of Vulcan timber’s stellar performance after 2 years being exposed to snow and icy conditions ❄️

Modulo Showroom Featuring Vulcan Joinery
Framing inspiring views is Abodo’s Vulcan timber used in window and door joinery within the custom-made architectural prebuilt Modulo home sited in Arrowtown.
Vulcan timber has superior thermal performance for energy efficient buildings and is Passive House Institute approved for joinery. Recognised for its stability, light weight, eco-credentials and rich colour, Vulcan timber is increasingly being used by joiners and builders in cool climes.
Abodo in the Channel Islands - Seacliff View
Located on the isolated island of Jersey in the English Channel, this elevated, high-end residence enjoys beautiful coastal views. However, the flipside to such a desirable site is exposure to the notorious English Channel weather. A stable and durable timber cladding was required to stand up to the harsh conditions while achieving the beauty of the design intent.
“Everything about it has been a wonderful surprise. Not a single bow. Easy on the chisels and saws, knotless and perfect to work with.” - Design and Build Team

Ohinewai Planer Dressed In Brushed Vulcan Cladding
A new planer now boosts our carefully crafted timber capability at Abodo’s Ohinewai Manufacturing site, and is affectionately known by the team as “The Duchess”.
Being an architectural timber business, the least we could do is create the best dressed soundproof box for our planer mill, while it’s smoothing and cutting lengths of Abodo timber to achieve a faster turnaround for profiled orders.
In true circular economy and sustainable fashion, shavings from untreated Tundra Cladding, and thermally modified Vulcan Cladding and Vulcan Decking, will be funneled from the planer to biodegrade back into the earth – and then used in agriculture and horticulture as a soil conditioner, through locally based company, Soilpro.

Vulcan Timber Joinery - The Baldy Carpenter
Valued for its eco credentials, stability and rich colour, thermally modified Vulcan timber is crafted by The Baldy Carpenter to custom make exterior architectural joinery: doors, gates and windows.
Head carpenter Fraser, shares his experience working with Vulcan timber:
“When the business first established its products in timber windows and doors, from the outset we realised we had to use a modified timber.
After trying several modified timbers, we felt that Abodo was the best placed product to give us what we were looking for.
From its environmentally friendliness, through to sustainability and its stability, it is the best material that we feel gives a quality product.”

Looking to add texture to your design? Try Vulcan Cladding in our new brushed finish.
Wood weathers naturally over time, exposing the wood’s inherent grain variation. We replicate this natural effect with a series of abrasive brushes to scour back the softer timber - and when combined with our pigmented Protector Oil coatings, many different effects can be achieved.
