The Bigger the Waves, the Bigger the Sharks! 🌊🦈
Its that time of year when we have the pleasure of meeting some seriously mighty Big Great White Sharks, but our tours also get to contend with crossing the Foveaux Strait in some exciting Autumn weather. Our tip for travelling in Southland this time of year:
a) keep a day free in your itinerary to allow for the weather
b) take the weather for what it is - we are in the "Roaring 40s" at 46 Latitude South!
c) bring a jacket ;-)

Season Update: Tough old week on the Strait - there has been sun, there has been rain, there has been wind... and the odd shark. Although our calm summer days may seem a bit elusive at the moment (and the sharks!) there is nothing more exhilarating than a day at sea that filled with potential! "Shark Cage Dive Company supports the Tiaki Promise"??? Hell Yes!! 🦈🦈 One of the key concepts for Tiaki is to Protect Nature. We have the privilege to witness one of the rarest, biggest and most majestic fish in our waters. We also carry the responsibility to protect, tread lightly and to educate. Our tours are designed and conducted in manner to support this commitment.
We may not be what you think we are... 🦈😜

Shark Tag located! Massive thank you to Kelsi and Quasi the Lab who located this precious wee package!

On the low tide yesterday evening, Quasi the black Labrador took his owner, Kelsi, for a walk, and after investigating a pile of seaw**d, the tag flew out! That bit of w**d had been searched previously but Quasi’s special talent for β€œrag-dolling” and shaking w**d dislodged it for all to see. The tag was on a very remote beach that can only be accessed at low tide. The beach is amazing – cliffs, white sand, cathedral rock formations and lots of black mussel shells, so the hunt was difficult πŸ˜‰ Kelsi and Quasi were two of the many locals in the area who came out to help in the hunt.

The Tag is part of the New South Wales Fisheries Shark Smart Program, led by Paul Butcher. Australia and New Zealand share the same wee Great White males, who cross the Tasman each year, and one sub adult male finally lost his tag close to Stewart Island, in the southern waters of New Zealand. The team at Shark Smart engaged us last week about the tag and its adventure in the Foveaux Strait, and it was just a case of waiting for it to land so we could locate it.

We are super excited to be able to send this tag back to the team at Shark Smart so that they can use that data to understand how Great Whites sharks behave and travel.

The team at Shark Experience are committed to spreading the word on the majestic Great White Shark and are proud to be able to help with any work that leads to their conservation and protection. Following the death of a Great White Shark in the Foveaux Strait last summer, we would love to see more monitoring such as this for Mango Ururoa in New Zealand.

UPDATE; it’s been found!!! Quasi the Lab and his fabulous owner, Kelsi, found the right bit of seaw**d at the right time! The tag is on its way to the Science guys now. Thank you everyone for your help!

UPDATE: 7/12/23 12pm; The Shark tag is still on that beach! The team monitoring the tag have confirmed its dry and in tne sun ( temp has risen today!) so our search today will be focused on driftwood piles!
Location is rocks or land known locally as β€˜cliffs by the mouth beach’.

Are you travelling south through the Catlins today? Or living in the Tokonui or Fortrose area? We need your help!

A NSW fisheries shark tag has landed on the beach near Fortrose and we’d like to help them get it back before the tide turns
Position at 8am 05/12/23

Its on land- a little beach located at:

Latitude : -46.58319
Longitude : 168.79826

If you find it, ring us for a wee Shark reward 🦈🦈🦈
