When I created Virtual Tourism New Zealand, it was with the aim of promoting our tourism industry to the world through full-immersion, virtual reality. Not 360 video and not regular video. Rather I wanted others to experience the next best thing to being there.
My passion has always been our historic buildings. The sites with lives and stories of their own. The Hawkes Bay Opera House, Mission Estate Winery, the historic Napier Prison, just to name a few.
Today has been a depressing day for me personally.
The Old Napier Prison was built in 1864, and was decommissioned in 1994, only to then be transformed into a backpackers and international tourist destination and has been my favorite destination in the Hawkes Bay (for personal reason's).
I have always known of the need for virtual tours, especially of our historic buildings and sites, but today was my moment of clarity, for today it was announced that the prison will be closing permanently, and that is a great personal loss for me, as well as the currently lease owners, and the many people who have worked there over the years, and the 1000's of visitors who have walked through the gates of this stone icon.
I am privileged to be able to have scanned the prison last year, and soon, those scans will be the only record left.
Because of this news, Muse3D has decided to keep those virtual tours active indefinitely on both of our websites, to honor those who have worked there in its current capacity, Namely Toro & Marion Wake , and their daughter Bonny, as well those who have worked or been housed there over the decades.
Too many of our heritage sites are closing, and soon will be apartment buildings or shopping malls or carparks.
I’m glad to be able to preserve a few.
