The government wants to electronically monitor some asylum seekers and migrants, and is preparing for mass arrivals of asylum seekers by plane.

For immigration while there may sometimes be great opportunities for people, you still need to be able to meet the criteria for those opportunities.

The immigration minister Erica Stanford was quizzed on Tuesday by MPs in the Education and Workforce Committee.

Wow, this is actually really common sense. As these visitors will already have been assessed as bonafide and lower risk by Home Affairs, INZ doesn't need to do the assessment again through the visa process. Well done. :)

New changes will make it easier for Chinese tourists to travel to New Zealand.

From November, Chinese tourists travelling to New Zealand from Australia with a valid Australian visa will be able to travel to New Zealand for up to 3 months with a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) rather than applying for a visitor visa.

Yes INZ are working quite hard in this respect. I thought the last statistic would be higher though.

Immigration Compliance and Investigations teams have been working to disrupt illegal activity by organised crime groups.

A three-month operation has resulted in:

- 16 infringement notices issued to companies employing staff in a manner that is inconsistent with a work-related condition of that person’s visa

- 38 deportation liability notices issued to people unlawfully in New Zealand or breaching visa conditions

- 62 visas for people not currently in New Zealand being cancelled, and a further eight visas being cancelled at the Border

- 8 passengers being offloaded from their flights to New Zealand.

You have heard it straight from the Minister; "I receive a lot of unsolicited emails like, for example, things from people in India asking for immigration advice, which I never respond to. I almost regard those as being akin to spam,"

I'm not sure why anyone would genuinely expect a Government minister to give friendly immigration advice, but it does kind of show that: 1. a lot of people don't know where to get immigration advice, 2. some people will try anything to avoid the proper process, or 3. some people really look down on the NZ Government (or possibly all three) :)

The Prime Minister says he's "relaxed" about Immigration Minister Erica Stanford's remarks in Parliament likening emails from people in India to "spam".

There really is not a lot else that can be done for such people as refugee status carries a lot of international obligations. This proposal does show how the Government ranks levels of visas though which we feel is not well enough understood.

Residence visas have a very low potential for control and removal compared to temporary entry visas (work, student, etc) which is why the application process is much longer and much stricter. Visitor visas also have a higher degree of scrutiny because they are often the first option to keep people out of the country so they are often more strictly considered than many people think.

Refugees' residence visas will be cancelled if they pose a risk to national security, under new government legislation.

I wonder if this turbocharging also includes trainng for immigration officers on how to process visitor visas correctly? There is not much sense in promoting tourism if bona fide visitors keep getting declined on their visa applications. :)

The initial investment would focus on encouraging visitors from a number of specific countries.

Which is what happens (in some cases) when INZ allow employers to handle visa applications. It seems the recent changes are targeted at stopping this though so hopefully it will.

A Christchurch restaurant director has been sentenced to 6-months home detention and a $10,000 fine after pleading guilty to multiple charges of breaching immigration law and aiding and abetting breach of visa conditions.

This individual lied to Immigration Officers and supplied false information to Immigration New Zealand.

This sentencing sending a strong message that knowingly supplying false or misleading information to Immigration officials will not be tolerated and anyone doing so will be held to account.
