Skål International Christchurch

Skål International Christchurch International Association of Travel and Tourism Professionals. Established in 1934. Connecting Tourism Globally.

Skål International is a professional organisation of Tourism leaders around the world, promoting global Tourism and friendship. It is the only international group uniting all branches of the travel and Tourism industry. Its members, the industry's managers and executives, meet at local, national, regional and international levels to discuss and pursue topics of common interest. The first club was

founded in 1932 in Paris by travel managers, following an educational tour of Scandinavia. The idea of international goodwill and friendship grew and, in 1934, the “Association Internationale des Skål Clubs” was formed with Florimond Volckaert as its first President, who is considered the “Father of Skål”. Skål International today has almost 13,000 members in more than 300 clubs throughout 86 nations. Most activities occur at local level, moving up through National Committees, under the umbrella of Skål International, headquartered at the General Secretariat in Málaga, Spain. Skål International is governed by an Executive Board of 14 Directors, elected by delegates to an annual General Assembly, held during the World Congress, hosted by a different country each year. This allows members first-hand observation of the travel and tourism potential around the world.

Skål Christchurch and Christchurch City Mission: A Partnership of Giving 🙏 🎄 🎁

For over five years, Skål Christchurch has proudly partnered with the Christchurch City Mission, hosting its annual charity auction to support those in need. This enduring collaboration reflects the heart and spirit of Skål’s ethos of friendship and service. At last week's event, the club raised $15,000 for the club and Christchurch City Mission!

Each year, this partnership grows stronger, thanks to the unwavering generosity of our Skålleagues. Members contribute auction items, bottles of wine for the ever-popular bottle auction, and food donations that enable families to enjoy a festive and memorable Christmas. The proceeds from these efforts directly benefit the City Mission, helping them provide vital support to the community.

This year’s auction promised to be another heart-warming success, demonstrating the power of coming together to give back to our community. Skål Christchurch is deeply thankful for the continued support of its members and encourages everyone to get involved in this meaningful tradition.

Together, let’s make this holiday season brighter for all. Skål!

Join us for our Annual Charity Auction Lunch for the Christchurch City Mission at The George on Thursday 21 November, 12noon - 3.00pm.

This day is all about us supporting the City Mission and raising funds before their Christmas Appeal, last year we raised an amazing $13,000! Funds raised will also go to us hosting the Skål International New Zealand National Assembly in April 2025.

We are calling on you for your support, and ask that you can bring an item or two for their Food Bank.

Our annual wine auction is back – so don’t forget to bring a bottle to donate.
We will also have our fantastic auction, so if you can help with an item for this – please contact our committee members, Kevin Gough or Gillian Officer, now if you can support.

On 4 October 2012, Skålleagues from Skål Adelaide and Skål Christchurch joined the Skål Twinning program.

This agreement is the perfect match; as sister cities with a love for wine tourism, sport, fantastic local produce from the sea to the land and passionate locals who are proud to call their city home. Skålleagues from both clubs are committed to supporting each other in the true ANZAC way…….so happy twinning anniversary to our friends across the ditch in Adelaide.

Today on World Tourism Day, we celebrate the power of tourism to bring people together and build bridges across cultures.

This year’s theme, "Tourism and Peace," reminds us of the incredible role travel plays in promoting understanding, respect, and unity among nations. 🕊🌏

Tourism is more than just visiting new places; it’s about creating connections, sharing stories, and fostering global harmony. Every journey we take has the potential to break down barriers and bring us closer to a more peaceful world.

Let’s embrace the diversity of our world and celebrate the beauty of our shared humanity. 🌟

World Tourism Day has been held on 27 September each year since 1980. The date marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Statutes of the Organization in 1970, paving the way for the establishment of UNWTO five years later.

🌿 Kia ora! Celebrating Māori Language Week! 🌿

This week, we honour the beauty and richness of te reo Māori, the language that carries the stories, traditions, and spirit of Aotearoa New Zealand. Māori Language Week is a time for all of us to embrace and celebrate the unique identity that te reo brings to our nation.

Here in New Zealand our Skål clubs proudly say our Skål Toast in te reo along with English.

Whether you’re a fluent speaker or just learning a few words, every effort to use te reo Māori helps to keep this beautiful language alive and thriving. Let’s take this opportunity to kōrero, learn, and share the language with our whānau and friends.

Mā te reo, ka ora! Through language, we can all flourish.
