Did you know Alpacas come in seven major colours or twenty-two shades of colour?

The main colours are white, fawn, brown, grey, roan, black and appaloosa or spotty. 🦙

Here at Silverstream, we have mainly white and fawn alpacas in order to produce commercial quantities of their beautiful fleece for sale.

The animals at Silverstream Alpaca Stud are mainly white and light fawn. 🦙
By restricting the colour range we can produce commercial quantities of white and light fine fibre.

Visitors to our farm are often shocked by just how soft our alpaca fleece is - especially in comparison to sheep and lambs wool!

Our mission here at Silverstream is to produce, soft, well-nourished, high quality fleeces that are uniform in micron, length and colour.

We often get questions from people here in New Zealand, and around the world, who are considering raising alpacas themselves.

One thing we always say is that alpacas are a reasonably hardy animal and provided they are given good pasture, fresh water, shade, shelter and good fencing, they will adapt well to their new environment.

A few basic facts about our adorable alpacas:

🦙 Average lifespan : 15 – 20 years
🦙 Origins : South America
🦙 Breeding life : approximately 12 cria (babies) per female
🦙 Average height : 1 metre at the shoulder
🦙 Average weight : 60-80 kgs
🦙 Fibre : softer, lighter and stronger than wool

Our Silverstream Alpaca farm tours are a wonderful way to interact with these adorably cheeky and friendly animals! 🦙

Throughout the 1 hour tour, you be able to feed, touch and handle the animals, as well as marvel at their soft and lustrous fibre. After the guided tour, you are free to explore and enjoy the Silverstream grounds.

Silverstream Work of Art made us proud at the 2023 National Alpaca Show. A daughter of Kurrawa Legends Thrill Seeker, Silverstream Work of Art won Junior Champion Female, Champion White and was then called forward as a contender for the supreme championship award.

We felt we had to show off Silverstream Tiaki's 2021 fleece. This is an intermediate female out of Silverstream Goddess by Kurrawa Legends Thrill Seeker.
The fleece length on this girl is exceptional as well as the lustre and highly defined staple.
Thrill Seeker has done it again and Goddess is pregnant to Thrill Seeker.

We are particularly excited about this year's fleeces. The staples are ultra thin, the fibre length is even longer than previous years and the lustre is truly amazing. Well done Silverstone Ice. The fleece below is from Silverstream Ultimate Best who from three shows was placed first each time as well as winning champion junior female and reserve champion junior female. We think she is very special.

Silverstream Alpaca stud have just completed their final show for the spring season at the NZ Agricultural Show in Christchurch.
Whilst we missed out on the big one (well done Shamarra), we never the less had a very successful show.
Of particular satisfaction was being placed first in the white classes for junior female, junior male, intermediate female, intermediate male, adult female, adult male, mature female and veteran female. This is certainly Silverstream's best result ever insofar as placings are concerned.

Silverstream also won Adult Male Champion, Mature Female Champion, Veteran Female Champion and Champion White.
Silverstream won Reserve Junior Male Champion, Reserve Intermediate Male Champion and Reserve Adult Female Champion. Then to cap off a memorable day, our 10 year old female, Cover Girl won Best Female at show.

In the Fleece Section, Silverstream Tribune won Supreme Champion Fleece with a score of 86. Silverstream fleeces also won white and light fawn champion as well as intermediate, senior and mature champion.
Tribune's success meant three supreme champion titles in the last three years and eight supremes overall.

Silverstream had another successful day at the 2021 Rangiora A & P Show.
Silverstream Top Class won Intermediate Male Champion
Yaamba Cover Girl won Senior Female Champion
Silverstream Rembrandt won Senior Male Champion and
Silverstream Sweet Talk won Reserve Adult Female Champion.
We took a team of 13 and came away with six 1sts, five 2nds, a 4th and a 5th.

The first of the spring shows for 2021 was the Ellesmere A & P Show. With so many shows cancelled, exhibitors were so pleased to finally show off their prize winning animals.

Silverstream had an excellent first showing winning SUPREME CHAMPION HUACAYA as well as three 1sts, three seconds and three 3rds.
Silverstream also took out Junior Champion Female and Senior Champion Female and Champion White.
Cover Girl's Supreme Champion win was even more meritorious given that she was 118 months old - surely a record age for a supreme champion on the NZ show scene.

Thank you Sue, Lindsay, Jill and Ray for leading our animals in the show ring. Hopefully I will be in better physical shape next week.
