A nice intro for the team with a hilly 55km ride incl a uphill handicap race, 3.5km swim at Captain Cook's monument and a 12km run down Ali'i drive. Finished off with a killer meal at TK noodle house.
Always good times on the Big Island.

I'm planning a big weekend of riding from Christchurch to Greymouth return at the end of April.
Basic details
- 500km riding in 2 days Christchurch to Greymouth return (touching the ocean on each side)
- 2k+ metres of elevation each day including Porters and Arthurs Pass.
- there will likely be a spread of abilities
- 29th & 30th April
- Support van and transport included along with dinner and 1 night accomodation
- Cost TBC but likely only ~ $300 (aim is to keep this really simple)

If you are keen get in touch. I'll release some more details once I gauge the level of interest.

Should be epic as always ;-)

Day 9 - The Kaiteriteri International Invitational Epic Camp Triathlon.

Only 1 pic today as the weather was diabolical but these are the days that you remember the most when you have to battle the elements as well as everything else.
Athletes biked to the lovely Kaiteriteri beach for the race briefing at which time the heavens really opened. Thankfully it was not too cold.

Swim 1km in very rough conditions so swim buoys were not visible until you got within ~20m which is all part of the fun.

Bike an undulating ~30km from Kaiteri to the "Source of the Riwaka". We were supposed to head up the Marahau Hill but decided against it given the conditions.

Run ~7km with ~300m of elevation. A few smaller climbs with steps to start then the long grind up the Corkscrew MTB track to finish at a lookout with a minimal view today.

A very honest day to finish what has been an awesome camp.

Tim Doyle took line and handicap honours today in front of Dean Galt (by 6sec on handicap).
Hayden Beetar retained the yellow jersey throughout the camp.
Dean Galt was the KOM winner.

Tune in to this weeks IMTalk podcast to hear from some of the campers.

Thanks for tuning in. If you are keen on attending Epic Camp NZ 2023 let me know. I've got a few ideas bouncing around.

Cheers

Camp Director

The penultimate day of Epic Camp NZ was a game of 1/3's.

First up was a 1hr drive for a chilly 1.5km swim at Totaranui Beach. Lovely swim but it was fresh.

Next an 18-19km hilly trail run on the bit of the Abel Tasman Track that most people don't do (myself included) from Totaranui to Wainui Bay. It would have been 16-17km but someone directed the whole crew the wrong way. Why this stretch of track is not pushed more is weird as it was INCREDIBLE. Highly highly recommend walking or running this track.

Finally the bike from Takaka to Motueka. Only 55km in distance but with a 9km climb as a race it was not an easy ride. This was compounded by the rain which got heavier and heavier up the hill. Across the top is was very ugly indeed. The rain was like daggers in your eyes. Descending in the rain isn't great at the best of times but the long descent on TT bikes was less enjoyable than it could have been. Thankfully we finished in the sun with the wind at our backs.

Tomorrow is the Kaiteriteri International Invitational Triathlon. Should be fun.

Day 7 Epic Camp NZ.
Sadly we're in the home straight but today was another brilliant day.
Stage 1 - Swim 2.2km around an island from Tata Beach - very nice. Water temp likely ~14-15c.
Stage 2 - Bike 48km with 45km "guess your power" aiming for Ironman effort. 1st place Rebecca Speirs who was bang on her predicted power number.
Stage 3 - 11km Trail run/walk near Farewell Spit finishing at Wharariki Beach - be sure to check out the cool cafe if you go there.
Stage 4 - Bike 48km back to the motel with a mix of social and not so social riding.

Shout out to Farewell Gardens camp ground for "hosting" our bikes & gear while we ran https://www.farewellgardens.co.nz

Our run of brilliant weather looks like it might be over with the rain coming for the next few days.

Epic Camp NZ day 6 - St Arnaud to Takaka.
Bike 154km (with some tacking on to 180-200km) including a 14km KOM over Takaka Hill, >1500m elevation in total.
Run - trail run for 1hr or 10km tempo or 7x1km intervals.

"What goes up must come down" is what you often hear when heading up a climb. Today we got to roll down all the climbing we did two days ago which was bliss as we also went from rain showers to blue skies. We did have the challenging Takaka hill to contend with - 10km of solid climbing with 4km of rolling at the top. Plenty of awesome efforts in excess of 90% FTP.

Some chose to do do some quality running off the bike while other did a run/hike to a very impressive cave.

Day 5 Epic Camp NZ - big run day.
Thankfully no biking to start the day as it was raining and bloody cold. Today was long run day with the option of doing a full lap of beautiful Lake Rotoiti which totalled ~27km.
So the distance was not crazy long but on tired legs and some rough terrain it was 3-3.5hr of jogging mixed with some walking unless you are Hamish Wall who tacked on to 40km and ~5hrs on his feet. Others choose the half lap of the lake to regroup a little at the mid stage of the camp. Either way, a stunner of a run and a very cool alpine contrast to the long run in Queen Charlotte Sound a few days ago.
Motivation was not sky high for the "optional" 30km recovery spin but conditions had improved somewhat so off we went.
To round out the day a few brave souls immersed themselves in the 8c lake for a few seconds which was noteworthy. The wetsuit swimmers made ~100m at a push.

Day 4 on Epic Camp NZ was "interesting"
Pre breakfast we completed an 8km run including a 5km guess your time followed by a 3km swim including a 1km guess your time (won by David Lock on 2sec off his prediction).
We (I - camp director John) knew pre camp that todays ride had the potential to go two ways as it was 100km uphill on very straight roads in one direction. The chances were we'd have a nice tail wind and not really notice the gentle incline or we might have a head win which would make for a long tough day. We got the later and not just any wind, it was full on deafening wind for over 4hrs up the Wairau Valley (aka Misery Valley). The 20km team time trial we did at the beginning of the ride seemed like a distant memory as we ploughed into the wind at ~20km/hr for hours. But we ALL finally made it and had a pleasant surprise 25km from home with a great coffee cart in the middle of nowhere.

Day 3 Epic Camp NZ - Queen Charlotte Sound
Another top shelf day on Epic Camp.
Stage 1 - 58km Blenheim to Anakiwa with a healthy head wind in places.
Stage 2 - Swim eliminator race at Anakiwa. Reps of ~300m with 2 athletes eliminated each round. Tall timber Tim Doyle took it out with better swimmers dominating thanks to camp directors eyeball measurement of the swim lap being long.
Stage 3 - 13km or 17.5km trail run on the Queen Charlotte Track - water taxi in, run back so no "out" option. Kudos to the boys that took the long option (Hamish Wall, Tim Doyle and support crew Andrew Abakhan). Absolutely brilliant run even on tired legs.
Stage 4 - 50km or 70km ride along Queen Charlotte Drive (70km option was for those that wanted the bonus point to get to 120km - it actually ended up being 128km much to the disgruntlement of some as an unnecessary extra 8km, but we got to see a nice beach :-) ). Queen Charlotte Drive was picturesque but nerve racking as the road has only recently reopened after the horrendous recent floods.
Stage 5 - a marathon meal out. Food was plentiful and nearly defeated us but duration of the meal had some nodding heads.
A very solid day.
