🚗 Accessible Accommodation Review: Turangi Leisure Lodge 🏡♿

Our road trip to Cromwell kicked off with a two-night stay at Turangi Leisure Lodge, the perfect stopover after a long drive from Auckland. It was myself, Finlay, and his teenage siblings—so, as you can imagine, good WiFi was a lifesaver! 📱💻

We arrived in the sweltering heat, and that’s when Finlay made an unexpected discovery—the beer fridge at the local liquor store! 🍻♿ Turns out, it was fully accessible (after I wrestled the door open for him), and we both enjoyed the much-needed cool air. Not sure what the sales assistant thought, but they didn’t bat an eyelid—Finlay must finally be looking his age… almost 20 on Boxing Day! 🎉

🌲✨ A Family Adventure at the West Coast Tree Top Walk! ✨🌲

We absolutely loved our visit to the West Coast Tree Top Walk near Hokitika! This was an unforgettable experience that left us feeling truly included as a family. 💚

With incredible staff, delicious food, great coffee, and the stunning beauty of native bush and birdlife, this is a must-do for nature lovers and bird watchers alike. 🐦🌿

🚴‍♀️ Adventure Time in Central Otago! 🚴‍♀️

Here’s a quick review of one of the cycling trails we tackled down in stunning Central Otago. 🌄 This ride wasn’t just about the views (though they were spectacular!); it was a real test of my abilities as I pulled Finlay, my adventurous adult son, along this unfamiliar trail.

There were challenges, laughs, and a few "what was I thinking?!" moments, but oh, the learnings! Every climb, twist, and turn taught me something new about what we’re capable of as a team. 💪

What really made the ride special, though, were the amazing people we met along the way. From helpful locals to kind strangers who lent a hand when the going got tough, they reminded me why it’s always worth stepping out of my comfort zone. They didn’t think I was completely mad for attempting this, which was a bonus. 😂

It certainly was an adventure to remember! 🌟

As we travel, we have to pay a lot of attention to accessibility—it's just how we navigate from one place to another. So, as we wandered through Hokitika, we couldn’t help but admire the ramped spaces outside shops and cafes. There’s something about seeing those thoughtful touches that makes a big difference. What do you think of them? Of course, not every shop had step-free access, and some streets still lacked drop kerbs along the most natural routes. But it was clear that some areas had really been thought through, and that definitely stood out. It’s always nice to see progress, even if there’s still work to be done.

I received a demonstration from the Hokitika i-Site Information Centre staff on the ease of packing and unpacking the manual ViMo Wheelchairs available for loan at their centre. They have two wheelchairs on hand. Additionally, they offer an informative brochure and map detailing accessible walks in Hokitika that can be completed using these wheelchairs. The ViMo wheelchairs are available for hire at $20 per day, which could be particularly useful for the West Coast Tree Tops walk. ViMo Wheelchairs

THE DUNSTAN TRAIL, CENTRAL OTAGO Today, we successfully completed the 16km Dunstan Trail section, starting from Smiths Way and ending at Cromwell Old Town. The entire journey took around 2 hours, including an additional 6km from Pisa Mooring, where our vehicle was parked. During the end of our ride, my ebike's battery level was critically low, with only one bar remaining, due to the added load of Finlay in his new Josi Trailer. Nonetheless, the experience was highly positive, and I am continually improving my skills. The trail itself was relatively easy, with minimal cornering and gradual gradients, providing an excellent opportunity for practice. Finlay had a fantastic time throughout the ride. He was singing most of the way.

We certainly had the weather today down in Central Otago to do part of the trails around Lake Dunstan, but it was like wheeling on the surface of the sun. Finlay was initially thrilled, but soon turned into a grumpy pants after a couple of hours, his temperature regulation skills are challenging thanks to his condition. So we had to high tail it home to cool him down, poor little dude.

HELLO AGAIN TO OUR ACCESSIBLE ROOM ON WHEELS

I spy our wonderful accessible home on wheels, all ready for our Christmas break. It’s been transported to Cromwell and all kitted out for Finlay to stay in. His shower tent is back up and we are ready to enjoy Central Otago. Finlay also gets to finally visit his fathers final resting spot 🎈

Yay, No.8 is ready to go in New Plymouth ♿️👍

Could really do with one while we wait to get onto the 3 hr 30 minute Interislander ferry trip to Picton from Wellington. There isn’t one on the ferry, there isn’t one here at the terminal and there is nothing over in Picton. They have all the other toilets available but not for those who need assistance to use a loo.

We have a celebrity in our midst! Here is Sophie Morgan testing out the seat our Jezza from Makingtrax designed. We are looking forward to seeing if this can work for our Finlay over the Summer. I wonder if Packrafting Queenstown could give us a dry trial.
