We have an important update concerning the removal of Monkey Puzzle trees at Dunedin's Arthur Street, the site of the city's first cemetery. Following our inquiries, a tree officer from the Dunedin City Council (DCC) contacted me to discuss this matter. It has come to our attention that these trees may be afflicted with a fungal disease, which could compromise their structural integrity, thus posing a potential health and safety hazard.

While the DCC has been very cooperative in addressing the issue, it is disappointing to note that they lack knowledge not only of the site's historical significance but also the importance of these trees in Victorian-era Dunedin. It has come to our attention that other Monkey Puzzle trees in the area may also be susceptible to this fungal infection.

These trees, especially those located at the Northern Cemetery and the Iona Church grounds in Port Chalmers, hold immense historical and cultural value. We remain hopeful that efforts can be made to save these trees and preserve the rich heritage they represent for future generations.

It's with a great deal of sadness that we bring you news of the removal of two Monkey Puzzle trees located at the site of Dunedin's first cemetery. These trees were significant plantings and for many Victorians protection against the devil during burial.
I wonder if those responsible are aware that to wake the Devil from this tree guarantees three years bad luck?
I will be investigating further.

According to folklore, the first person to be buried in a cemetery was believed to return to guard the site against the devil. Because the job was considered so great, a cat or dog was often buried before any human, so it would become the guardian of the dead and remain so until Armageddon.
For more superstitious stories & fabulous folklore, join us on one of our enthralling cemetery walks.
See you there if you dare!
