Biosecurity New Zealand would like to hear the views of people and groups affected, or interested in, the use of Controlled Area Notices (CANs). You can complete the survey here: https://mpi.surveymonkey.com/r/5CR596G

Don't forget about the ACRT/MPI hui in Claris this evening - 5pm at the Claris Conference Centre where this will be discussed in person. Contact [email protected] for an online link to the meeting.

Future of the CAN's

These are the two options for when the current CANs expire:

Similar to the status quo - a controlled area notice that has location-specific restrictions and/or requirements for affected areas. The locations under controls would be called Exotic Caulerpa High Risk Zones.

Having no exotic caulerpa controlled area notices at all.

Come to the Aotea Caulerpa Response Team meeting and have your say Thursday 5pm Claris Conference Centre

As summer rolls to a close and the autumn season comes into play, it ‘s epic to look back on all the legends that we have had onboard this season to either catch a feed, nail a PB, or learn how to best utilise their catch !
Winter fishing is the next chapter, with good Snapper, Kahawai and even the odd resident King coming into the shallows to put havoc onto our reels !
If this sort of action excites you then be sure to get in touch with the team and book your winter fishing adventure.

An absolute pleasure to have this keen Aussie Spearo along for a couple of days !
Working the kelp lines on the first day for snapper, followed by exciting diving on some pins on the second day !
This keg came in at 23.5kg and wasn’t the biggest in the school either !

“Fujiwhara effect” inbound from the Tasman !

2 Tasman lows this morning are merging under what is known as a 'fujiwhara effect' to form 1 large synoptic scale Tasman low pressure system. An associated trough will move through the upper North Island today kicking off heavy downpours and possible storms during the day. Expect tomorrow to be wet with a rainband preceding a cold front from the low. Keep an eye on the sky and radar if you are outside in the next 36 hours.

The new anchoring rules on Aotea Great Barrier Island are now in place

Tougher anchoring restrictions to manage the spread of the pest seaweed Caulerpa on Aotea Great Barrier Island are now in place.

A quick reminder of the new rules:

You cannot anchor a vessel in the three harbours under controls – Blind Bay, Whangaparapara Harbour and Tryphena Harbour.
Anchoring is now only allowed in an emergency or with a permit from Biosecurity New Zealand for some limited circumstances.
Rod and line and hand line fishing is now allowed from the shore, or from structures fixed to the shore – for example wharves and jetties.
All other fishing remains prohibited, such as spear fishing, gathering kina and crayfish, longlining, net fishing and drift fishing.

Keeping your boat and equipment clean is the best thing you can do to avoid spreading marine pests and diseases, including exotic Caulerpa. If you See W**d, Chuck it Straight Back. That means any seaweed - it's good practice and you don't have to be an expert in identifying Caulerpa.

The invasive seaweed Caulerpa brachypus was discovered in New Zealand just over a year ago, and it promises to ruin everything. On Aotea/Great Barrier Island, people are sacrificing their way of life in an attempt to contain the weed—and stop it reaching the mainland.

The pair of otoliths shown here once belonged to snapper “Number 26”. They were gifted to the museum by marine ecologist Darren Parsons, who harvested them in 2001 from fish confiscated from a poacher at Cape Rodney-Okakari Point Marine Reserve, colloquially known as Goat Island, north of Auckland. Number 26 weighed in at 7.815 kilograms and was 72.2 centimeters long.

Similar to human middle ears, otoliths or ear stones help fish orient and maintain balance. They are located in the skull, below the brain, behind the eye. Made mostly from calcium carbonate and protein, they are laid down at different rates throughout a fish’s life. The process leaves alternating opaque and translucent zones or bands on the otolith, similar to growth rings in a tree. By counting the zones scientists can estimate age – invaluable for assessing the status of fish stock and for managing fisheries sustainably. Snapper or tāmure (Chrysophrys auratus) are estimated to live to 65 years.
