Why we do what we do 🙂

A great photo showing end grain on a piece of eucalyptus flooring blank.
The grain orientation goes from 1/4 sawn (barely) to lots of rift then flat sawn.
Notice where it's flat sawn the wood has checked open internally.
This cell collapse happened in the flat sawn part of the board as the wood there will dry a lot quicker vs where it is ideally 1/4 sawn.
One of the several reasons we prefer to 1/4 saw most eucalyptus species is to help with the drying process as it will dry slower helping against issues like cell collapse.

The first wood being stacked into our new piece of yard below the current mill pad.
This area will accommodate more long term drying of timber for ourselves or customers and free up more of the working area around the mill.

We have been working on this for a few months and while not all finished yet its great to start to use it!

A different job today, with 170 eucalyptus lattice pieces for use in building yurts.
Took a while to dock longer flooring boards to get the right length clears then pass the boards through our small edger to get the 50mm strips but it certainly worked!
They will be off to the machinest next week to be machined into finished size 😎

Another good use of nice eucalyptus timber which is good to see in our books!

Ash eucalyptus is being cut for flooring. It's being quarter-sawn for stability, and it's showing some lovely 'ripple' or compression grain, so it should look really stunning when it's made into a floor!
A few packs of it were stacked and wrapped this week.

The logs were recovered by Geoff during a property tidy-up job, and it's great that the better logs have been up-cycled into a better product than firewood which is what we like to see!

Loading out a customers timber this morning, they have some nice transport!
We had to get some timber samples ready and off to joinery shop for another customer, using our trusty moisture meter to see the wood was nicely air dry.

We also had to fix and rebuild our repurposed conveyor off the back of the mill, but it's going like a champ now!
