It's Conservation Week/Te Wiki Tiaki Ao Tūroa, and we are proud to support and the awesome work carried out by the team on Whenua Hou/Codfish Island. Thanks to their efforts, there are now more Kākāpō than there have been in almost 50 years.

Kākāpō are a flightless, nocturnal parrot unique to Aotearoa. They only breed once every 2-4 years when rimu trees produce enough fruit, and are very vulnerable to predators. Whenua Hou is a predator free sanctuary thanks to the continued efforts of the Kākāpō Recovery Team, and it's geographic location off the west coast of Rakiura makes it ideal for keeping predators away.

For more information, cool Kākāpō content as well as live cameras, and to see how you can get involved check out https://www.doc.govt.nz/our-work/kakapo-recovery/

Our Story

The first air transport to connect Stewart Island and the mainland was Stewart Island Air Service, operating an amphibian aircraft. The plane landed in the harbor and taxied up the beach to the local hotel. This operation was succeeded by Southern Air Ltd with the establishment of an airstrip at Ryan's Creek. Stewart Island Flights is a subsidiary of South East Air, which was foundered in 1993. Today, Stewart Island Flights is locally owned and operated providing scheduled flights linking Stewart Island and Invercargill as well as a number of exciting alternative locations, providing access to the more remote reaches of the island. We proudly operate two Britten Norman Islander aircraft, one Piper Cherokee Six aircraft and one Cessna 185. All aircraft are maintained to the highest standard and fulfill all safety requirements.
