WINTER ❄️ Certainly putting the 'Alpine' in Mackenzie Alpine Horses! It brings so much beauty here in Tekapo, but also brings the curtain down on our 23/24 trekking season, and what a magical season it's been!!! So many interesting people from all corners of the world, so many laughs, so many stories, so much FUN! We are truly privileged to be able to share our epic experience with every one of you. But for now it's time for our wonderful horses to head for their very well deserved holiday. Not exactly a tropical one, but a chance to simply be couch potatoes... sleep in, eat & hang with friends. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Boys!!! Enjoy your R&R!!! Also a HUGE thank you to our amazing team of girls, Summer, Nat, Kayla, Meg & Britt! What a fabulous job you have done, thank you for everything!!! We look forward to meeting a whole lot of new faces next season, opening September 28th 2024

Our 4 hour Glacier Country trek immerses our riders in the best of Balmoral Station, a working High Country farm, you'll travel across vast tussocklands to the picture perfect Lake Alexandrina, stumble upon Merino ewes & their very cute lambs (during lambing season) and venture up the iconic Mount John and alongside Lake Tekapo for scenery that needs to be seen to be believed!

Enjoy a refreshing stop at Lake Alexandrina along our 4 hour trek. We ride over a larger area of Balmoral Station to visit two lakes- Lake Alexandrina and Lake Tekapo. 🐎🫒🥘

Lake Alexandrina is our first lake stop. This lake is a spectacular example of a South Island high country lake, and is a hidden gem to many in the Mackenzie Region.

The lake is spring-fed, surrounded by tawny-coloured dry tussocks of the region and ringed by tall mountain peaks. 🏔🏔🏞🏞

A paradise for those into high country fishing, the lake is abundant with brown and rainbow trout, plus salmon. It’s also very deep, making it an exciting challenge for fly fishing.🏞🐟🎣

Lying parallel to the much larger counterpart Lake Tekapo and sitting within a protected wildlife area, Lake Alexandrina is a serene place to head. Free from motor boats and jet skis, the lake and its surrounds are magnificently peaceful.🛥🚢

The legends of Ngāi Tahu tell of Motuauriki, who was the ancestor on the Ārai-Te-Uru Waka that capsized on the Otago coastline. 🛶🌊🐚

After the Waka capsized, many passengers went ashore to explore the land. Legend states that they needed to be back at the waka before daylight. Many did not make it, including Motuariki, and he was instead transformed into the island of Motuariki
