Urgent: Transpower Outage in Tekapo, Mount Cook and surrounding areas.

We want to inform our community about an urgent power outage tomorrow morning (early Thursday) from 01:30 to 04:30am. This outage is necessary as Transpower needs to complete essential work on the network.

Following the recent helicopter incident, the network was temporarily reconfigured to ensure safety and stability. Now, Transpower will restore the 110kV line to its original state, allowing them to resume their planned critical maintenance work.

This outage will only affect those who were originally impacted by the Transpower outage on Friday, 27th September. Direct notifications have been emailed to all affected customers. To minimise disruption, this outage has been scheduled overnight when electricity demand is lower.

Please treat all lines as live during the outage for your safety. We appreciate your patience and understanding. For outage queries, please contact us. For more information about the work being undertaken, contact Transpower at [email protected] or 04 495 7000.

Snow looking very likely! ❄️🥶

❄️⚠️Latest snow update ⚠️❄️

As has been mentioned for a few days now. We are watching a cold surge of Antarctic air due to arrive from Monday and be off an on till Friday.

Here's What we know:

BELOW 200MSL
Snow flurries look possible but brief and unlikely to settle. This is likely from Wednesday to Thursday.

During this time rainfalls with up to 30mm possible between Monday and Friday.

BETWEEN 200-300MSL

This is the where based on current data we believe is the settling level. This is not 100% locked in but on current data this is the suggested level.

Sunday - Monday light rain with NW spill over possible.
Tuesday to Thursday. Temps drop during Tuesday afternoon and turn to snow late afternoon evening and ease on Wednesday afternoon.

Timing is the key here around heaviest of the moisture and temps. They have to align if you are to see any snow on the ground.

5-10cm would be about the limit. With a potential for around 35mm of moisture total to work with. So around 25mm will likely fall as sleety rain.

300-500MSL
Sunday to Monday spill over rain is possible with 10-15mm max.
Tuesday to Thursday is likely to see snow falls.

Depending on your stance around snow.

Low risk is 15-25cm 30% Chance
Medium risk 10-15cm 40% Chance
High risk is 5-10cm 60% Chance

With each risk the more altitude you have the higher the risk.

ABOVE 500MSL

Heavy Snow is at a high risk with 30cm plus possible the higher you go.

IMPORTANT NOTES
This system looks to be followed by some hard frosts. interior areas could see double digit negatives. Especially the high country.

🟩The Alpine passes are all likely to be effected. Given NZTAs reluctant stance to allow chains to be used on State highways you can guarantee with 2cm on the road they will just close the roads so maybe factor that in if your travelling. If more so now given they have installed gates to lock people out of using the roads which if your on the alpine side of the Porters pass you will freeze in your car.

🛑If there is snow on the ground it could last for a week or more
This will be very tough on new born stock.

On the plains, Frosts will keep daytime highs to low single figures.
-4s and -5s will not be uncommon.

🟦Now there is no guarantee with any forecast. But the above is our best analyst of what the models are telling us. I have been especially vague around Thursday-Friday next week as there is still a lot of uncertainty around how this will play out.

Pic is from Weather Watch showing both ECMWF and UKMO on Tuesday night.

⚠️⚠️❄️❄️Heavy Snow for the McKenzie Country Saturday into Sunday looks likely. We have been watching this for a few days. ⚠️⚠️❄️❄️

Current data this morning has shown a sharp increase in moisture with snow amounts now looking like up to 20cm for Tekapo and as much as 5-10cm for Twizel. It could be more but will come down to timing of moisture arrival and cold air arrival.

The Lindis Pass may struggle to remain open from Saturday 12pm onwards and about 4pm for Burkes Pass.

This is great news for the ⛷🏂SKI FIELDS ⛷⛷ in this area. Ie

Current Data snowfall projections.

Roundhill and Ohau pushing 40-50cm.
Dobson 30-40cm.
Awakino might get 20cm plus.
Fox peak 30cm
North Canterbury Fields 5-10cm including Mt Hutt.

Please note this is based off the latest modeling data. If it changes we will update you.
