Scientific name: Dasyatis spp. (multiple species in the family)
Size range: Varies by species, but many can have a wingspan of up to 2 meters.
Lifespan: Around 15-25 years.
Diet: Bottom-dwelling invertebrates and small fish.
Habitat: Sandy or muddy seabeds, often seen in shallower coastal waters.
Interesting fact: Stingrays are known for their graceful swimming and the iconic diamond-shaped body.

“My favourite part of being a part of the Clearyak Team is seeing the different scale of people’s reactions.
I realise how lucky I am to see what I do each day when people are genuinely amazed by seeing the seaweed!

The coolest thing to see in the Marine Reserve is definitely dolphins 🐬- I was lucky enough recently to have a quiet day on the beach and dolphins were playing in the water so I took a Clearyak out. Incredible how close they came - footage to come soon 👀

If I had to describe my ideal day at work in emojis, it would be:☀️ , 🚫 💨, 🚫 🌊!”

Our Species in the Spotlight is...🥁

Snapper 🐟
Māori name: Tamure
Scientific name: Pagrus auratus
Size range: Typically 30-50 cm, but can grow up to 1 meter.
Lifespan: Up to 60 years.
Diet: Varied diet, including smaller fish, crustaceans, and squid.
Habitat: Found in a range of environments from shallow waters to deeper reefs.
Interesting fact: Snapper are one of the most curious fish in the Reserve - on a good day they’ll often come up to check out the Clearyaks!

Our species in the spotlight this week is...🥁

Blue Maomao 🐟
Māori name: Maomao
Scientific name: Scorpis violaceus
Size range: Typically 15-20 cm, but can reach up to 30 cm.
Lifespan: About 10-15 years.
Diet: Zooplankton, small crustaceans, and algae.
Habitat: Often found in schools near rocky reefs, caves, and kelp forests.
Interesting fact: Blue Maomao are known for their striking appearance and are a favourite subject for underwater photographers.

The Hauraki Gulf covers roughly 4000 square kilometres, from the Coromandel Peninsula and the Hauraki Plains, to Great Barrier and Little Barrier islands and beyond. Most of the Gulf is a marine park with 50+ islands and 5 marine reserves. Goat Island is our personal favourite part of the Hauraki Gulf. It's located about an hour and a half north of Auckland and covers approximately 500 hectares of coastal ocean.

Marine reserves (including Goat Island) are strictly no take areas - did you know that this doesn't just apply to marine life? Everything in marine reserves is protected, from the fish and creatures in the sea and rock pools, to the sticks, stones, shells and sand on the beach.
