We often have opportunities to engage with students about our work at The Centre for GOOD Travel and discuss how tourism could serve thriving communities and places. Most recently, our co-founder, Eliza Raymond, spoke with students at the Victoria University of Wellington through a seminar for their Wellington International Leadership Programme (WILP). Together with the students, Eliza explored the question: can tourism be a force for GOOD?

The students shared some of their reflections from the seminar and how it shifted their perspectives and thinking on tourism’s purpose.

Youth make up an estimated 20% of global tourism annually and empowering them to travel responsibly and understand tourism's potential could lead to important shifts in the industry.

Thank you to the WILP students for your engagement in our session!

Another spot we love in Aotearoa New Zealand, is Waka Abel Tasman.

They offer Waka (Māori canoe) tours for visitors and tourists, school groups, and corporate teams. Wake Abel Tasman describe the Waka tours as an "inclusive experience where everyone can feel the joy of working as part of a team" and as a chance to share in their ocean heritage.

Our co-founder, Eliza Raymond, recently did a Waka experience with her family and spoke about what a fun and meaningful experience it was.

We spoke with Lee-Anne Jago, the owner of Waka Abel Tasman in the GOOD Awaits podcast. Lee-Anne and her husband Todd offer waka experiences in the Abel Tasman within a cultural framework of Maori tikanga and world view.

They place their community at the heart of everything they do in their business and are passionate about uplifting rangatahi (young people) and supporting their community to thrive.

Still exploring the North Island in Aotearoa New Zealand, next we showcase Brian and Nicola Megaw of River Valley Lodge.

River Valley Lodge sits right next to the beautiful Rangitikei River and offers stunning whitewater rafting trips for those who want to be on the river. Guests can also rent an ebike and explore the country roads, relax by the river and breathe in the surrounding beauty, or explore and learn about River Valley's regenerative farming.

Brian, Nicola, and their family believe in serving food that is ethical, local, and environmentally sustainable. Their garden and food philosophy is an expression of their core beliefs about the holistic nature of what River Valley does.

When talking about their work at River Valley Lodge in Season 2 of the GOOD Awaits podcast, Brian shared about the deep connection they have to their place and how this informs and shapes their business, and how they host.

Over the next few weeks, we’re celebrating and sharing about Aotearoa New Zealand. Although we have a global reach, our foundation and roots are in Aotearoa and the place has impacted our approach to travel and contribution to the world.

New Zealand is a place rich with natural beauty and indigenous wisdom. Tourism in the country has been shaped by this and led to Aotearoa being at the forefront of a shift in tourism, a shift to a model that is more regenerative and aims to support thriving communities and places.

We’re travelling to New Zealand through stories, imagery, and resources. We hope you’ll join us!

Debbie Clarke, our Director of Regenerative Development, and Michelle Holliday, The Centre for GOOD Travel Advisor, attended the Impact Sustainability Travel & Tourism Conference in Victoria, Vancouver Island, Canada.

Michelle’s powerful keynote on the first day, introducing her regenerative hosting ecology, set the tone for ongoing conversations on hosting, collaboration, and community wellbeing throughout the summit.

Debbie and Michelle also led an interactive session on Understanding & Applying Regenerative Thinking, bringing attendees together in conversation about what’s required of them to do this work in authentic ways.

Debbie also moderated and contributed to a panel on Designing Regenerative Experiences and Itineraries with Pamela McGarel and Celes Davar.

"I was moved by the level of openness and readiness that participants brought to our sessions. There is huge energy right now for new ways of thinking about how to move forward, and this was evident at IMPACT. The reality of the urgency of our times was a theme throughout, coupled with the need to slow down enough to examine the change in thinking we need to bring a regenerative mindset to all our actions. I felt very honored to be involved and look forward to continuing these important conversations. I have much gratitude to Michelle, Pam, and Celes, for our deeply co-creative preparation for both sessions, and especially to Kaitie Worobec from IMPACT for having the courage to bring new voices and contributions to the summit,” shared Debbie Clarke.

Thanks go to the whole IMPACT team for facilitating this important conference and platform for sharing and learning and to all the attendees for your openhearted engagement.
