Have you been watching all the SailGP boats out on our stunning harbour and wishing you were out there enjoying the beautiful scenery?
Well you can! While we aren’t a F50 foiling catamaran our steam power is pretty impressive 😉 💨 ⚓️
We have 2 Sunday sailings left for our season before we head in for maintenance over the winter.

Here’s another great way to help keep some of Lyttelton’s history alive… our givealittle page!
Our sailing season is now over and our winter months are filled with maintenance. We can guarantee that there is always something to do to ensure our old girl is ship shape for sailing.
As you know we are a volunteer organisation who rely on generous donations, public sailings, merch sales and grants to keep us going.
Every little bit makes a difference and allows us to continue to steam! This is something we hope future generations will get to enjoy as much as we do 💨
Feel free to share this around, you just never know who is out there in your world that would love to support this unique piece of history.
Thanks in advance 😊

You can’t beat this sound 😍
We are so grateful to all our volunteers who keep our unique piece of history alive to share with you all!
What did you enjoy the most when you came onboard? Let us know below, we would love to hear!
A perfect afternoon onboard with a BBQ to say THANK YOU to all our volunteers (& their families) who have worked tirelessly this season so that you could all enjoy our beautiful vessel. We really couldn’t do it without them.
Here’s a few things you might not know..
Did you know that EVERY aspect of the running of Tug Lyttelton is done by volunteers?
- Every Thursday a volunteer team spend a few hours on board keeping up with the maintenance so we can continue to sail, pass surveying, keep our marine license...
- During our sailing season a team arrive at 8am on a Sunday to begin stoking the coal so it’s warmed and ready for our 2.30pm cruise. This is in addition to the team who have been down on a Thursday and Friday starting the fires.
- Our emails are manned by a couple of volunteers in addition to their usual day jobs
- Our website and booking system is uploaded and maintained by a volunteer who does it over and above their usual job
- Every charter we do is run by volunteers, sometimes these are 1 hour and sometimes up to 6hours
- A large amount of our volunteers are retired,
they are highly qualified and skilled in the marine industry which is why they choose to spend their retirement sharing their passion with others, especially the younger guys coming through. Skills money can’t buy!
- It costs approx $70,000 a year to keep our pride and joy sea safe and ready. Whilst we receive some grants to help majority of the funds needed are raised by us, which is why your support is so appreciated.
We have had an exceptional season and are so thankful to everyone who took the time to come out for a cruise 🙂
And thanks again to our incredible team!
First PHC of the season is about to departure! Have a great trip everyone on board!
National Volunteers Week 2019
It is National Volunteer Week and we are so thankful for the many volunteers that put in hours of work to help maintain this historic vessel, it is no easy job and without them Tug Lyttelton would not exist.
You may not know, but not one person who is involved in this project is paid, and once we start sailing again this coming summer it will really be all hands on deck as our team of volunteers will offer hours and hours of their own time to ensure public cruises happen, functions can take place and that people get to experience a little piece of this steam history that we are so passionate about.
To every single one of our volunteers THANK YOU for all you do to keep this piece of history alive. We value you so much.
If you want to support the work we do please head over to our givealittle page, every little bit helps!
