The Gaya Tree Mangawhai Friday deliveries start this week with delicious plant based foods. We’ll be starting with a smaller menu and increasing over the next few weeks.

Winter Solstice celebration 💜

WINTER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION

Monday 21 June, 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Come and join in celebrating the Winter Solstice. Each person walks the spiral to the centre, where they light their own candle to place along the spiral. When everyone has walked the path, the whole spiral is aglow with lights. We’ll be using apples which have been cored to place a tealight candle in, otherwise bring a lantern or jar.

This is followed by the festival of St. John’s which is about letting go of the old year in preparation for Matariki. Bring a pinecone for each person/family to throw into the fire. Tuck into the pinecone a leaf or piece of paper with words or drawing written on - something you would like to let go of.

A shared supper of soup and bread will be enjoyed afterwards. Please something that is vegetarian (you can reheat once here) and bring your own bowls and spoons.

Arrival 5:30pm, beginning 6:00pm
Ends 7:30pm

*Tea-light candles will be provided.
* Wear warm clothes and footwear as we will be standing silently during the St. John’s fire outside, and please do not use torches or phones.
*This event is alcohol free.

The Winter Solstice is an important moment in the yearly cycle of life for us all on the Earth at this time. The warmth and light of summer is breathed into the heart of the Earth, digested, revitalised, and rebirthed again after the Solstice, on through the Spring Equinox as the Sun, Moon, Earth,and other planets continue their rhythmical dance in space through the Universe.

Mid winter is a time to connect deeply to ourselves, prepare a womb like vessel to conceive the seeds of new possibilities, intentions, hopes, dreams and wishes, that can be birthed in Spring. It is an inward time for hibernation, sleeping, dreaming, and reconnecting to the light and warmth within ourselves again.

It can be a time to let go, surrender, and be present in the moment after the busy, outward socialising, and receiving of spiritualised life forces, and energy from the Summer.

WEDNESDAYS @ THE GAYA TREE

We are excited to be expanding our day and offering on Wednesdays at The Gaya Tree for primary and intermediate aged children.

A rich array of activities are woven throughout the day in the peaceful and creative environment on Tara Rd at The Gaya Tree and surrounding bush. The day includes a delicious whole-foods morning tea and lunch.

We welcome Melissa Hambly who started Nature Kindy in Mangawhai and who is currently running ‘The Outdoor Classroom’ on Garbolino Rd. Melissa supports children’s intrinsic and highly capable desire to learn. She sees her task as being an attentive, loving and knowledgeable facilitator, extender and supporter.

The day at The Gaya Tree will host an indoor flow with Gabrielle and a focus on music and instrument studies, arts, whole-foods and nutrition. The outdoor flow with Melissa’s guided play weaves woodwork, reading and journaling with tikanga Māori, our whakapapa, family histories and stories; and getting to know our beautiful and special land of Mangawhai.

We are at capacity for ages 5 - 6 with 7 spaces left for 7 - 12 year olds. We will cap numbers at 18 after which we will start a waiting list. Our day runs from 8:45 am - 2:30 pm.

Arnna is the current chair and co-founder at Nature Kids Coop in Longbay, Auckland. NKC runs a number of one day programs with nature play facilitators/teachers who have many years experience from nature kindy and the philosophy founded by Jan Beatson at Play and Learn.

For more information about Melissa’s learning initiative for 2021 at The Outdoor Classroom in Mangawhai please call her on 021 02557291. The classes are for 6-8 year olds and a wait list will start once full.

Melissa holds a Montessori Certificate 3, a B. Ed., and a post-grad diploma in Early Childhood Studies. She is also thrilled to be currently training with renowned outdoor educator John Lawry from Artisan Pathways.
