Whether you are a royalist or not it has to be acknowledged just what an incredible and strong woman Queen Elizabeth II really was.
There will never be another like her.
Rest in peace your Majesty.

So this is me for the rest of the arvo and evening.
Doing a few of my favourite things. Bit of photography, bit of artsy fartsy s**t, a stroll on the beach, a bit of reading, oh and just a wee bit of black gin.
Feeling grateful to have the opportunity to have some quiet Mama time at the beach to unwind and relax.
Feels kinda nice to be the guest for a change rather than the host.

>> Pakihi Track condition (18 December)
After the deluge on 15 December, Pakihi Track had a couple of hefty tree-falls but they're now cleared.
The bottom 8km (below the swing bridge) was raked and a small slip cleared (on 18 December).
800m below the hut there's a spot where you have to lift the bike over a windfall, at a point the track is narrow.
The top half of the track is mostly in really good condition, just a few spots with rock debris, we'll clear that early in the week (Edit 21 Dec, this has now been done).

UPDATE: Pakihi has been maintained after the storm, see later post.
The eastern Bay of Plenty district and up the Coast has been taking a weather hammering, 80mm to 130mm in most areas in the last 12 hours, and pretty breezy too. Pakihi has had 100mm in 12 hours to midday Tuesday, the river is well up. Fair to say, you'd be foolish going into the hills today. We will assess Pakihi Track ASAP, report, and hopefully get maintenance happening on the weekend (weather dependent). If you do decide to do Pakihi before then, be prepared for anything: slips, dropouts/washouts, windfalls. Motu Road can be expected to be sloppy for a while and Dunes Trail can also be expected to have some minor rutting.
The Cycle Gisborne shuttle van high on Motu Road. It's great to see all three shuttle companies have had trips the last few days, including Motu Trails Hire and Shuttle dropping riders for an adventure on Otipi Road.
Track conditions> Motu Road was in excellent condition on the weekend. Pakihi, we've had a report of a windfall tree down over the track, thank you Motu Trails Ltd for the update. The windfall is passable but a bit of a scramble. With a wet regional weather forecast the next couple of days, we aim to do a Pakihi maintenance run next weekend (17/18 Dec). If you are riding Pakihi before then, be aware the rain will have brought down rock/tree debris.

Meet our new neighbours!
Pretty exciting to have these amazing creatures quite literally on our back door step.
It was a cool day our son and his school have been lucky enough to help in getting the reserve ready for the Tuatara arrival. The Whinray Eco Trust do such an incredible job not only for the Tuatara but also for our native Kiwi.

Rustic accommodation available in the heart of Motu Village.
Perfect for a quiet weekend getaway, or maybe you are looking for accommodation while cycling the beautiful Motu Trails, or you could be doing a bit of hunting or fishing.
Whatever brings you to the Mighty Motu, if you are looking for a comfy and cosy place to lay your head then The Weka Nest is the perfect choice.
The cabin has just been completely re-furbished, with all new linen, duvets, pillows, dinnerware and kitchenware.
The Motu region has so much to offer for outdoors enthusiasts. From Hunting and fishing, the Motu trail cycleway, the Whinray Reserve nature walks ( if you are really lucky you may hear or even catch a glimpse of the Kiwi that call the reserve home), the Motu Falls is also worth a look and you'll be able to get pretty up close to the many cheeky Weka that roam all over the area.
Motu village is small with a handful of homes, a school and the Motu-vation Cafe that also doubles as a museum with lots of information about the Motu region and a collection of acquisitions from a bygone era, it is only a few mins stroll down the road.
We are also lucky enough to have a Kiwi Creche just behind the property, when they have resident Kiwis in you may hear them at night along with the quirky Weka calls.
