Last day on the cruise today, and we were in Coquimbo. This is the narrowest part of Chile, only 90km across, and is a very fertile agricultural area, growing grapes, madarins, papaya, avocados. We headed inland to Alfa Aldea, a sun observatory, where got to look at the sun through 2 special sun telescopes, and were fed with delicious local fruit.

23/11/2023

Yesterday we stopped in Iquique, what used to be a small fishing village but is now the duty free port of South America. We drove inland to Humberstone, a ghost town that used to be a Saltpeter (nitrate) mining town. This was once the main industry around here until a cheaper sythentic form was created. After that we headed to to the Pintados Geoglyphs, a 3km stretch of geoglyphs on the edge of a salt flat. If you are quiet you can hear the salt cracking all around. The theory on the geoglyphs (apart from aliens!) is that this was a trading area, and the glyphs are pictures of what could be traded here, hence the pelican, shark, llama pictures.

Welcome to Chile and the Atacama Desert, driest place in the world, receiving an average of 0.08mm rainfall a year. Today we ventured into the Desert, first visiting some sculptures representing male and female forms, (left male, right female) then on to Codpa Village, in one of the few fertile valleys near to Arica (where the ship docked). On the way, we stopped at an area where travellers have left little rock piles, to represent trapping the devil under heavy rocks. This gave an incredible view of the stark beauty of this desert. At Codpa we were blessed by the local Shaman in a coca leaf ceremony, before being treated to lunch and some of the delicious fruit grown in the small village. Back to the ship for dinner with some of the Discovery team at Koko's Asian Fusion restaurant, then a Cabaret show performed by our Cruise Director. A fantastic day!

Today we were in Matarani, our last port of call in Peru. It is located in the bottom of Peru and is at the top end of the Atacama Desert. After a welcome by some local dancers, we drove 2.5 hours inland to the town of Araquipa. This town still shows a lot of colonial influence from when the Spanish came, which is reflected in the beautiful buildings around the main square. We also visited the Santa Catarina convent, a 16th century complex that spans 20,000 sq. metres, and while most of that is now a museum, a small portion is still inhabited by Dominican nuns. It was originally started by a wealthy widow who convinced her friend they should all give up their homes and make a community, dedicate themselves to god, but still have servants, jewellery, music concerts - essentially a social club! 300 yrs later the pope decided it wasnt right the nuns were behaving this way and the rules became much stricter. Very interesting place!

18/11/2023

We spent the day today in Paracas, first port of call as we head down the coast. Paracas is the gateway to the Ballestas Islands, home to thousands of birds. The islands are white due to all of the guano, which is harvested every few years and used as fertiliser. Unfortunately it is a La Nina year, which means warmer currents and less food, so less birds. We saw Grey-footed Bo***es, Humbolt penguins, red-tailed condors, fur seals and sea lions, so was still very interesting. Had a walk around Paracas and watched a man weaving, then tonight, back onboard, we had an Afroperuvian dance group come on board to perform. When Spain invaded Peru, they brought African slaves with them, and these slaves were absorbed into the culture, particularly along the coast. Great night!

Today was the start of our cruise! After a short stop in Miraflores (the best part of Lima to stay in) we met our transfer and were taken to the port in Callao (Lima) where we boarded the stunning Scenic Eclipse 2. Only launched in April this year, shr is still very new, and wow, what a beautiful ship. She is an Expedition ship and spends a good portion of the year in the Antarctic or Arctic, so has a lot of extras, like helicopters, a submersible, kayaks, sups, and zodiacs. We are in a lead-in cabin, but you would never know - so lovely! After boarding we had lunch in the Yacht Club restaurant, then explored the ship before meeting in the theatre for Discovery team introductions, and a rundown of the shore excursion tomorrow, followed by dinner in Koko's asian fusion restaurant. All i can say is YUM!!

Today I ticked off a bucket list item - Machu Picchu. Such an amazing place, nothing compares to being there. We were first entry of the day at 6am, definitely worth it as very few people were there. The sight of the ruins appearing out of the cloud cover was truly magical. 70% of Machu Picchu is original - it was abandoned when the Spanish invaded, so they would not find it, hence it is in such good condition. Next was the train ride back to Ollantaytambo and back to Cusco, where we visited two more Incan ceremonial sites, including a visit to a mummification chamber! Then a quick tour of Cusco before heading to Lima.

Today was very busy, we are trying to squeeze 4 days into 2! We were collectedby our driver Juan and guide Freddie and were off to Maray, the site of an Incan laboratory. The Incans developed a way to experiment with different plants from all over South America to see what would growing various climates, and each terrace is naturally a different temperature. After that we headed to the Maras Salt Pans, also from the Incans - each family in the village own some of the salt pans and keeps the money from the naturally occurring salt. After lunch at a restaurant only serving delicious local produce we drove through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo, the site of an Incan temple and the town that still has a lot of Incan features. Incredible view from the top, but not easy on low oxygen! Lastly thing fir the day was a trip on the VistaPeru train through to Aguas Calientes, ready to head up Machu Picchu in the morning.

Tracey is off on another adventure, to South America this time!
We arrived into Cusco last night and were met and taken to our hotel, the Aranwa Cusco. What a stunning hotel, and with a complimentary room upgrade, just wow!! This was a priests residence in the 16th century, and the artwork near the ceiling of our room is still original. Such a beautiful place to stay!

Our final day on tour saw us leave Mostar and head to Trebinje, in the Republic of Serbia (still part of Bosnia). Such a pretty town! After a walking tour of the city and a byzantine orthodox church, we headed out of the city to a Be My Guest experience, at a family owned restaurant. We had a folk dancing demonstration, and were then serenaded by accordians - such an incredible experience. Then back across the border to Croatia and we ended our tour in Dubrovnik. What a wonderful country Bosnia is, definitely one to visit, and doing it as part of a tour is ideal - our tour guide, our driver and the local guides just added so much to this trip.

Mostar, where we have 2 nights, is the southern state of Herzegovina (still in Bosnia). Today we had some choices of activities, to do with The Travel Corporation's program. First of my choices was to visit a 15th century monastery in Blagaj, which is located at the start of one of the rivers. After lunch we went to Stolac and visited a womens institute, where they are trying to find ways for local women to increase their income through making local products - in todays case, soap making. Thiscevening some free time saw usback in the Old Town, doing a bit of retail therapy and dining at a local family restaurant, with the night ending with the most delicious crepes!

Today we left Sarajevo to head towards Mostar. On the way we stopped at Tito's Bunker - Tito was a dictator who ruled Yugoslavia for decades. During the Cold War the US gave Yugoslavia money to rebuild infrastructure, and Tito spent US$4 billion on building a nuclear bunker that took 26 years to build, and Tito died before it was completed. It remained a secret up to 2004, and was never used. Then we headed to Mostar, which is a gorgeous city in southern Bosnia. During the last war, Mostar was 90% destroyed, and has mostly been rebuilt. A city walking tour through the old town to the famoud bridge, was followed by wine tasting dinner at a lovely vineyard.

Today was a day of 2 halves. This morning, we heard all about the war in Bosnia from 1992 to 1996, the horrific loss of life, what it was like to live here through the longest seige in modern warfare history. We visited the Tunnel of Hope, a secret tunnel that saved the city of Sarajevo by creating a supply line into the city. Sarajevo was shelled an average of 330 times a day for 4 years - the craters from the bombs have been memorialsed with red paint and are called Sarajevo roses. Houses throughout Bosnia, but especially in Sarajevo, still bear bullet holes, and there is an area in Sarajevo known as Sniper Alley. The resilience of the citizens was incredible. The second half of our day was all about food! We ventured back to the craft area, experienced Bosnian coffee, cevapi, some delicious Bosnian desserts, and burek (my new favourite food!) - all so delicious! In the craft area, shops tend to specialise in one thing, and do it really well, whether it is food, or products eg coppersmith, shoemaker. A wonderful historic part of Sarajevo.

We left Dubrovnik today and headed to Bosnia, travelling along the Dalmatian coast before heading inland inyo Bosnia Herzogovina. The scenery was incredible, such a mountainous, lush green country. Sasha our tour director filled us in on the fascinating history of this country and its neighbours, and the stops along the way were at beautiful locations, so made the journey go quickly. Sarajevo is our stop for 2 nights, so after a quick refresh at the hotel we headed off for a city walking tour through the old town craft area, stopping at the first mosque in Sarajevo and ending where Franz Ferdinand was assasinated, triggering WW1. Sarajevo is 54% muslim, so hearing the Muezzin calling everyone to prayer just added to thd uniqueness of this beautiful city. Then we were off to a local family's home for a hosted dinner. An incredible opportunity totalk to locals about their lives, country, and the war, with the most delicious homemade food.

Day 3 - Today we entered Bosnia Herzogovina, travelling along the Dalmatian Coast from Dubrovnik then turning inland to head to Sarajevo. Big drive, but the scenery was stunning, and with a couple of stops for food the time flew by. Bosnia is a very mountainous, lush green country, with the landscape changing completely from the coast through to Sarajevo. Our guide Sasha provided insight into the history of thos country and the surrounding Balkan neighbours, all so interesting. Once we arrived in Sarajevo we did a city walk through the craft quarter with a local guide, taling in the main mosque and ending where Franz Ferdinand was assasinated, triggering WW1. Unbeknownst to me, Sarajevo is 54% muslim, so hearing the muezzin calling everyone to prayer in the middle of a Europen city was unexpected, but just added to the uniqueness of this beautiful city. We then went to a local family for a hosted dinner - absolutely delicious homemade food and fascinating to talk to locals about their lives.
