We are so excited to reveal our newly refurbished and re-designed, dedicated Hawke's Bay Air Ambulance, Te Manu Atawhai - Bird of care ✈️
Artist Tim Whaitiri-Henderson, with the supporting supervision of Chris Bryant-Toi (both pictured) at the EIT Hawke's Bay | Te Pūkenga IDEAschool, worked with local iwi to design a narrative of the Pacific ancestor, Māui and the kōkako bird.
According to Māori traditions, kōkako filled it’s blue wattles with water to provide relief to Māui while he fought with the sun, Tamanui-i-te Rā. Inspired by this tradition, Tim visually acknowledges kōkako as a ‘manu atawhai’ or avian aid providing health care and wellbeing within a Māui spiral that counters adversity.
We’re delighted to have new livery design that symbolises cultural inclusion and reflects the work the aircraft does in safely transporting patients throughout the country, at a time when these attributes are a key focus for an evolving health sector under the new Health New Zealand and The Māori Health authority.

How do we change the face of ? Together. 🤝

This year Amelia Boyce and her family are looking forward to spending Christmas together.
This year’s festive season will be more special than ever, because last year Amelia spent Christmas at Starship – and it came completely out of the blue.
The 14 year old from Blenheim was hit by a car while using a pedestrian crossing to cross the street. It was December 19th, just six days before Christmas Day.
She suffered numerous injuries including three skull fractures, concussion and a broken hip. Her parents Dean and Adria, and siblings Phoebe and Caleb, soon found out Amelia’s serious trauma injuries meant she needed to get to Starship, in Auckland.
The Starship National Air Ambulance was called upon and Amelia was retrieved from Blenheim and flown to Starship’s PICU under the care of the Starship intensive care retrieval team rostered on that day.
Her hip injury required urgent surgery and she underwent an operation not long after arriving at Starship.
Amelia had been in a drug induced coma after suffering a seizure from her head injury and when she regained consciousness and stabilised the following day, she was shifted to the neurology ward where she stayed for 3 ½ weeks.
A full leg cast, a broken hip and a broken arm meant Amelia was only able to bear weight on one arm, and she required the help of numerous medical teams from across Starship’s specialities… the surgical team, neurology team, orthopaedics, physio and occupational therapy.
Amelia was in Starship for more than 3 weeks, including Christmas and New Year.
Adria and Dean are incredibly grateful. “Our experience of Starship and the medical team was incredibly positive. Amelia’s treatment, the communication and support we received every step of the way was fantastic.”
“Starship and the air ambulance is an amazing life support which the whole of New Zealand relies on. The dedicated and experienced staff helped us through a very difficult time.”
Following their Starship experience Dean raised close to $4000 by inspiring donations through a community fundraising initiative called ‘Vintage 21 Mullet-o-thon’ and the family are now encouraging New Zealanders to support the Starship Foundation’s 2021 Starship National Air Ambulance appeal ❣️✨
