Napier Libraries are hitting the road - in the form of a brand new mobile service that will take the library and their range of services out into the community. Starting on Tuesday, you’ll see their colourful van at their first stop at Anderson Park (10am-12noon). Marina, Martin and Kaewa are survivors. Today, they live safe and sound at the National Aquarium of New Zealand but they are there because all three were attacked by predators. Their injuries mean they can’t fend for themselves in the wild.⁠ In the last two weeks alone there have been reports of at least eight dead kororā (Little Penguins) washed up along Hardinge Road and in the Inner Harbour area in Napier. Pathology results suggest predators may be responsible. In some cases it may have been a seal but it’s more likely to be a dog or a cat. ⁠ For the wellbeing of kororā – listed as ‘at risk’ by DOC – it is vital people keep their dogs on leads when walking the inner harbour and along Hardinge Rd. Kororā breeding time is in full swing, with a number of young kororā around the rocks.⁠ The Napier Port, Hawke's Bay Regional Council, Napier City Council - Te Kaunihera o Ahuriri, National Aquarium of New Zealand and Department of Conservation are all really keen to raise awareness among dog owners of the importance of keeping dogs on leads.⁠ People can visit the DOC campaign’s website (https://bit.ly/3T1meBh), the show their support for wildlife protection and get a Lead the Way lead for their dog.⁠ If an incident does occur where wildlife is injured, members of the public are encouraged to immediately contact 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) for support. #korora #littlepenguins #penguinprotector #leadtheway #penguins #penguin #aquarium
