🍋When life gives you lemons-make memories 🍋

Big shout to our adventurers that come along and push themselves to something they haven’t done before and even when the weather situation changes - making the most out of the experience up in an alpine environment is the most important !

🌧️ We keep everyone safe while giving an experience of a lifetime - even when the weather changes which can happen very quick here in the Tongariro National Park. ❄️

⛈️ We are experiencing a bit of storm at the moment and hopefully will come out with a bit more snow at the end of it 🧊

July done and dusted ✅ we had all conditions that you can imagine up at the Tongariro Alpine Crossing!
From lots of snow to little snow ❄️
massive ice sheets and crystals 🧊
to ice melting on the emerald lakes 💎
horrendous winds 💨 no winds,
whiteouts ☁️ blue bird days ☀️
Fluffy snow ❄️ ice harder than concrete days !!

While this is not unusual, you never know what the next day is gonna bring and we are hoping for more snow soon!

🧊 The conditions on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing quickly changed overnight! Big icy patches and hard crust snow especially on the ridge line to red crater - crampons and ice axe absolutely necessary 🧊

Our group had a great safe day in the beautiful sunshine today. More snow on the way so keep an eye on the weather and don’t forget to book your guide 🙂 🏔️ ❄️ 🧊 ☀️

🚦 Safety FIRST 🚦

🗻It’s that time of the year again where everyone gets excited about the coming snow in the mountains but it also brings dangers that we want to highlight 🗻

🧊The Tongariro Alpine crossing gets underestimated for the hazards and risks that come with it 🧊

❄️ From May till October it is a difficult , expert level hike. The trail can be covered in snow and ice.
Weather can be wild, unpredictable and harsh.

Last week temperatures plummeted down to -12 degrees on red crater and we witnessed freedom walkers struggling to overcome exposed and steep sections with a lot of them finishing after sunset.

Guides from Adventure Outdoors Tongariro are here for your safety and carry additional safety gear to keep you safe!

It’s important to understand the weather forecast, share your plans, take care of yourself and others plus carry the correct safety equipment. ❄️

🎒

- Backpack with waterproof plastic liner and cover
- Personal Locator Beacon PLB
- UHF Radio
- First aid kit
- InReach with GPS map
- Thermal mat
- Map and compass
- Head torches and spare batteries
- Survival blanket / survival shelter / whistle / pen / extra food and water
- Equipment to boil water , lighter / matches / hot water
- Toilet paper and hand sanitizer
- Rain jacket + pants / windbreaker
- Warm hat, neck warmer , gloves ( thin and thick ones )
- Sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
- Hand and feet warmers
- Balaclava
- Spare clothes ( wool, fleece pants/jerseys/socks/ hat/ gloves / neck warmers )
- Helmet, ice axe , crampons ( and spare parts of those )
- Food and water for the whole day plus extra for emergency
- Phone 🎒

We’ve had such a pleasure hosting so many adventurous clients from all over the planet who wanted to take in the beauty of the incredible Tongariro National Park.
From cruise ships to school groups, young to old - sunrise to sunsets - even snow a couple of weeks back, it’s been an amazing summer 🌺💥 ☀️

Thanks for everyone who chose to come along with us!
Now where the seasons are changing keep a close eye on the weather before you head out into the outdoors!
