🧊 The conditions on the Tongarito Alpine Crossing quickly changed overnight! Big icy patches and hard crust snow especially on the ridge line to red crater - crampons and ice axe absolutely necessary 🧊

Our group had a great safe day in the beautiful sunshine today. More snow on the way so keep an eye on the weather and don’t forget to book your guide 🙂 🏔️ ❄️ 🧊 ☀️

🗻It’s that time of the year again where everyone gets excited about the coming snow in the mountains but it also brings dangers that we want to highlight 🗻

🧊The Tongariro Alpine crossing gets underestimated for the hazards and risks that come with it 🧊

❄️ From May till October it is a difficult , expert level hike. The trail can be covered in snow and ice.
Weather can be wild, unpredictable and harsh.

Last week temperatures plummeted down to -12 degrees on red crater and we witnessed freedom walkers struggling to overcome exposed and steep sections with a lot of them finishing after sunset.

Guides from Adventure Outdoors Tongariro are here for your safety and carry additional safety gear to keep you safe!

It’s important to understand the weather forecast, share your plans, take care of yourself and others plus carry the correct safety equipment. ❄️

💥BOOM - and just like that the summer is officially over !

We’ve had such a pleasure hosting so many adventurous clients from all over the planet who wanted to take in the beauty of the incredible Tongariro National Park.
From cruise ships to school groups, young to old - sunrise to sunsets - even snow a couple of weeks back, it’s been an amazing summer 🌺💥 ☀️

Well that is one way to do some schooling !
Those kids from Omokoroa School had a fabulous time with us.
Tongariro Aloine Crossing had to be cancelled Due to bad weather and we offered some alternative options which they absolutely loved !

💦 hot pools , bonfire and yummie hot chocolates kept everyone warm and cosy

Their first visit to the Tongariro National Park and definitely one they will remember 🤩

🌋 Here, at the most southern end of the pacific Ring of fire we can literally hear and feel our planet breathing.
Steam rising from far below hissing through cracks who emerge along the trail.
The natural heat source is magma 1-5km below the surface, the cold water from rain, snow, streams and lakes leak downwards into fractures and faults where it is heated when coming in contact with hot rocks or magma - which then flows upwards by pressure.
Volcanic wonderland right here in the heart of the Tongariro National Park ! 🌋

Spring is in the air! 🌼
We’ve had some beautiful days when the sun came out and had the last of our
Winter tours - for now 😬 you never know!

The lakes have emerged from their winter sleep, and are showing off their beautiful colours once again. Birds are chirping in the forest and sun is burning ☀️

A few things have changed in regards to the Tongariro alpine crossing that you should be aware of:

🏔️ A free booking system has started and DOC is encouraging people who would like to hike, either part or the full Tongariro Crossing , to book it through their system, this is mainly to get an idea how many people are using the track for future decisions on capping numbers on the Trail.

Wow ! We had a couple of fantastic days while the season is changing, witnessing the melting of the lakes and snow along the way which is now exposing a beautiful Color contrast.

Soon there will be plenty of people on the trail again and changes are coming into place to keep those numbers under control.

Spring is officially here ! 🌸 ☀️
Temperatures are rising and snow is slowly melting in some areas of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
The sun has been shining but still conditions can change rapidly and we are still expecting some snow in the forecast.

This sunshine really is magic these days !!
Had some awesome trips recently look at all the fun we had 🏔️☀️💥

🏔️The gift of Tongariro to the people of New Zealand was in effect a gift to the people of the world.
Vulcanise, Glacier’s , plants and animals of the park represent a combination of landforms and natural communities which is unique on this planet.
In 1993 Tongariro National Park became the first National Park under the new criteria to be granted, world heritage status on both Landscape and cultural grounds.

The park is one of only 29 sites in the world with dual World Heritage status. 🏔️

What a bumper snow season this year !!
It keeps on giving ❄️

🏔️Until 2007 the crossing was called the "Tongariro Crossing", but this was changed to the "Tongariro Alpine Crossing" to emphasize the extreme weather on the exposed terrain. Almost the entire length of the crossing is in volcanic terrain with no vegetation and fully exposed to weather – at moderate altitude🏔️

Big shout to these kids from Outdoor Education class / Cambridge High school!
We set of to the Tama Lakes through ankle to knee deep snow, everyone having a turn at braking the trail all the way to the upper Tama Lake (1440m )

An absolute stunner of a day in the beautiful Tongariro National Park !
They can be very proud of this 18km hike,
It’s a great alternative to the Tongariro crossing.

🏔️Info: Tama Lakes are two lakes that occupy old explosion craters on Tama Saddle between Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe with panoramic views.

Tama Saddle acts as a funnel for prevailing westerly winds and windproof warm clothing is recommended all year around. 🏔️

🌳 Nature provides you with some physical and mental goodies. It inspires you. It makes you feel connected. The beauty of it turns into happiness and reduces stress 🌳

💪 Guides take away most worries and push you further - sometimes out of your comfort zone - but you leave stronger, mentally and physically - don’t worry we’ve got you!! 💪

❄️ Also, Nature is powerful and does its own thing - you just have to hope for the best!
Thats what we did in the recent trips. Sometimes you just can’t trust the forecast and the weather is unpredictable but we still try our best to get an amazing experience in for you no matter what ❄️

The Central Plateau lower elevation is about 800m above sea level.
Mt Ruapehu rises to 2797m.
Mt Tongariro 1978m.
And Mt Ngauruhoe 2291m.
Mixing mountainous terrain with the New Zealand climate makes for interesting weather.

It can snow on the Crossing during summer. I can be fine and clear, with little wind. It can be hot and dry. It can rain. The forecast can be completely wrong. The weather can change from good to bad with little notice, or the other way round. It’s always tricky to plan ahead with those conditions but we are always trying to make it out there when it’s safe!

When the clouds finally lifted after it’s been storming for quite some time, it revealed some beautiful scenery!
But don’t be fooled, those conditions atm are dangerous with rain falling on the snow then re-freezing you get an ice crust a couple of cm thick !
Our guides kept everyone safe on this trip to Mangatepopo saddle but as you can see it’s very shiny up there.
It’s best to take a guide these days and don’t forget do NOT go out there without the full equipment and experience.
Stunning day, now another storm on the way so stay safe and warm everyone ! ❄️🏔️ 🧊

Everyone enjoyed the fine weather window last week, including the GNS team who keep us all safe by updating the public from their observations and monitoring.

The Tongariro complex contains multiple volcanic cones; Te Māri crater erupted in twice in 2012.

GNS also monitor present conditions of New Zealand’s active volcanoes by:
* Visual observations
* Chemical analyses
* Seismic and acoustic monitoring
* Ground deformation assessments

The NZ Volcanic Alert Level system is based on 6 levels and is intended to describe the current status of each active volcano.

The current Alert level for Tongariro is 0 but don’t forget, an eruption may occur at any level, and levels may not move in sequence as activity can change rapidly.

The Tongariro National Park is a true adventure wonderland all year around !
Look at those snow capped hills framing the emerald lakes, like gems carved into the landscape with beautiful Reflections of the red crater caldera.

Did you know:
Ngatoroirangi, the eponymous ancestor of Ngāti Tuwharetoa ascended the great mountains of the Central Plateau over 30 generations ago. It was then that he named Tongariro and the many features of the surrounding landscape, declaring this area as home for his descendants.

Wrap up warm - it’s a little chilly out there!
A bit of a winter tease on the Tongariro crossing brought some beautiful ice along the way.
