🤔Did you know...

Aotearoa's National Park is made up of three andesitic volcanoes at the heart of the park - Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu. They mark the southern boundary of the Taupō Volcanic Zone, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. 🔥
⛰️The name Tongariro comes from the Māori words 'tonga' meaning "south wind" and 'riro' meaning "carried away."
🏔️Ngauruhoe, meaning "throwing hot stones," is the most active of the three.
🏔️And Ruapehu, meaning "pit of noise" or "exploding pit" in Māori and has a deep active crater between its peaks, which fills with water between major eruptions, forming Crater Lake!
This together makes a unique and stunning area for adventures and an ever changing landscape.

🤔 Did you know...

👑 In the 1880-1890s, Ngāti Tuwharetoa (a local tribe) gifted the 2640 hectare Tongariro mountain peaks to the Crown in 1887 to ensure it's protection for all.

⛰️ This led to the establishment of Tongariro National Park in 1894, New Zealand's first national park and the world's fourth. Over time, the Crown expanded ownership to 20,000 hectares, reducing Ngāti Tuwharetoa's guardianship of their sacred lands.

🌏 Then in 1993, Tongariro National Park became the first site inscribed as a Dual World Heritage area for its cultural and natural significance, led by indigenous recognition!

20 km or approximately 35 mins

🌄 Trip Details:
National Park Shuttles is the only Tangata Whenua (local people) operator from the National Park Village, offering a fantastic transport journey departing from the ONLY all day car park with a one-way transport shuttle service to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

This secure car park is located on State Highway 46, road end of the Ketetahi track. Ride with us and park your car stress-FREE. No roadside parking on the main highway - which is not secure and unsafe. You will enjoy a tranquil drive to the start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in comfort.

At the end of your hike we will pick you up from your car departing from the secure and safe car park.

You won't have to walk out to your vehicle when you finish your trek. There is another 900-meter journey back to where you parked your vehicle.

21.8 km 35 minutes transfer from Erua, National Park to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing trail beginning Mangatepopo. 39 km 45 minutes transfer from the Ketetahi trail end back to Erua, National Park.
(Note: Travel times are estimated allowing for road conditions and traffic. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike averages about 6 to 8 hours. Please remember to be kind.
