At long last this Sackville street house is now a home. It was a pleasure to share dinner with the proud owners. Well done Shane, Marian, Jason, Simmo, Sam and all the rest of the team that have turned a set of plans into a reality.

A little shed on the edge we were involved in. Roof extends to ground level to give additional roof area and storage. 10kw of solar panels to help keep the lights on when the grid goes down.

This house is finally taking shape in Sackville Street, Fitzroy. The owners are buzzing! Jason Williams Builders are ripping along. Woodspan floor system by Taranaki Pine. So fast, the floor went up in 1 day! Steelwork by Profab Industries is on point out front and looking sharp. Looking forward to seeing this progress....

New Heat pump Hot water cylinder saves ≈$4 a day. After 20 years our trusty Rheem mains pressure 180l packed it in and started leaking. Our hot water usage has crept up over the years along with our 3 teenage kids feeling the need for longer + longer showers. We got talking to Mike Wallace Premier Heating and he had just the thing, a STIEBEL ELTRON "Heat Pump" cylinder, I had heard of them and TBH have never specified one, I typically have let the client decide their way of water heating, as everyone has their own preferences. Well our preference was for saving some $ on our power bill, while having a simple reliable system, our son was adamant that a gas califont was the way to go, but we are rural + we don't want to rent bottles, have a truck arrive every time we get low and as I understand it, per KW gas is more costly on bottled gas, so we opted for the HW heat pump. Our old cylinder would go and the new one would sit outside, humming away as the heat pump turned warm AIR to HOT water, just the same a s a A/C unit does.

SAVINGS: We were hopeful but weary of the claims that it would use only 30% of the power our old system would use. I think it is close to that, we are saving on average $5 per day from what we were using.

Difference in usage? Enough hot water? Yes We did notice the water pressure was slightly lower, so when showering our mixer sits in a slightly different position, and filling a bucket of hot water takes a little longer than we were used to, Mike said that could be adjusted if we chose, but really it doesn't matter, apparently the default pressure is now set lower than 20 years ago.

So I will be suggesting to my clients consider this as a great way to make your home more energy efficient.

As you can see on the chart, our power consumption has dropped considerably.

20 years young, still love living in the first house I ever designed. Such an amazing learning experience and all I would change is a door or 2, the light switch next to the bed, and maybe more insulation, but we were on a budget and double glazing was still a rarity!
