Yesterday we surpassed 1000 pushups each, all very sore but more motivated than before.

Any donation you can spare would be much appreciated by all involved in this necessary and sadly desperate cause for help.

Safely managing lubricant within an Ammonia Refrigeration system is one of the most fundamental activities; yet, also one of the most dangerous - often a live Line and Equipment Opening process.

By performing regular condition-based maintenance on oil rectifiers, you can improve the performance, efficiency, and reliability of the plant. However, it is essential to be cautious and follow proper safety protocols, as any mistakes can have serious consequences.

At Gauge Refrigeration, our primary objective is to play a pivotal role in the reduction of Ammonia incidents on a global scale; therefore, we aim to make our critical course modules accessable to everyone.

I was asked today by one of my clients to list all the benefits of training their workers to help the sale to his manager. Sadly the manager needed persuading and didn't grasp the concept already.

Improved safety:

By providing workers with training on how to safely handle hazardous substances, businesses can help prevent accidents and injuries. This can reduce the risk of harm to employees, as well as to the general public and the environment. By investing in training, companies can help ensure that workers are aware of the risks associated with hazardous substances and know how to properly handle them to avoid accidents and injuries.

Enhanced compliance:

Proper training can help ensure that employees are aware of and adhere to relevant regulations and guidelines for handling hazardous substances. This can help businesses avoid fines and other penalties for non-compliance, as well as protect them from legal action in the event of an accident or injury. By providing training and ensuring that employees understand and follow the appropriate regulations and guidelines, businesses can demonstrate their commitment to safety and compliance.

Increased efficiency:

Trained workers are likely to be more efficient and effective in their tasks, which can help improve overall productivity. By providing training, businesses can help ensure that employees have the knowledge and skills they need to effectively and efficiently handle hazardous substances. This can help reduce the amount of time and resources needed to complete tasks involving hazardous substances, leading to improved efficiency and productivity.

Enhanced confidence:

Providing training can help build confidence among workers, which can lead to improved morale and job satisfaction. When employees feel confident in their ability to handle hazardous substances safely, they are more likely to be engaged and motivated in their work. This can lead to better job performance and a more positive work environment.

Reduced liability:

By providing training and ensuring that employees are knowledgeable about how to handle hazardous substances safely, businesses can help reduce their liability and risk of legal action in the event of an accident or injury. When employees are properly trained, they are less likely to make mistakes that could lead to accidents or injuries. This can help protect businesses from legal action and potential financial losses.

Improved reputation:

A commitment to training and safety can enhance a business's reputation and help it attract and retain employees and customers. By demonstrating a commitment to safety and providing training to employees, businesses can show that they value the well-being of their employees and the community. This can help attract and retain customers, as well as attract and retain top talent. A strong reputation for safety and training can be a valuable asset for businesses.

Today is our 5th Birthday! - to be honest, I was not sure if we would get this far.

The week before Christmas 2016, we had just $25 to our name after all the mediocre presents were bought for the kids. We didn’t know at the time, but the first invoice was on 60-day terms and due in February… So things were a little tight for a while. I refused to ask for help or handouts. Needless to say, we found a way...

This was among many challenges to work through since our conception, but they never overshadowed the many milestones.

• Building a terrible website from scratch
• Creating, delivering in-person Ammonia Refrigeration training
• Facilitating first Ammonia safety day in Fiji - ever.
• Facilitating the first Ammonia safety day in NZ in over 60 years.
• Instructing members of Worksafe and Fire and Emergency
• Developing the first Ammonia specific emergency management system in New Zealand alongside Mines Rescue.
• Gaining another Qualification (Adult Education)
• Becoming Certified in Process Safety Management
• Establishing an Online Platform that provided access to Natural Refrigerant training for thousands of people all over the globe.
• Several interviews with Shecco – Ammonia21.com
• Teaching with one of my personal superheroes, Andrew Perks, in South Africa.
• Presenting a webinar in Ireland for IIR.
• Founding the Refrigeration Professionals Guild of New Zealand beside some great friends and colleagues.
• Creating the annual RPGNZ awards and developing sponsorships.
• Becoming a board member for two industry organisations.
• Working alongside my best friend every day and watching her grow as a technician.
• Watching my kids grow up – dropping them off at school being able to attend performances!
• Meeting tons of awesome people and like-minded folk all over the world. (Jeremey Williams, Daniel Rhis, Josh Rees, Trevor Mathews, to name a few)
• Conducting compliance audits in three different countries for some big household names in primary industry.
• Developing Process Management Solutions for all our customers
• Building a Flammable refrigerant course with my good buddy and well-respected teacher Glenn Marsh.

There is no way we would be here if it were not for our excellent clientele, sharp suppliers as well as friends and family egging us on. For this, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

On that note, for this week, only (8th – 12th November) we would like to give back a little where we can.

We would like to offer our Ammonia advanced appreciation self-guided online course for just $125 (70% off)

We recommend that if this is something you are interested in, please get in touch via [email protected] so we can ensure a place on the Learning Management System.

Hazchem Placards (Ammonia).

Did you know the Emergency Action Code has been changed to 2XE since 2017?

HAZCHEM is a warning system applied throughout the world for transportation as well as manufacturing facilities storing and using hazardous substances in the process. HAZCHEM pictograms are multilingual signs that warn us of a specific danger - the pictograms are easy to understand, even for a small child, the images of death and burns speak for themselves.
The alphanumerical Emergency Action Code (EAC) is critical for emergency responders as it provides key information on how they tactically manage an incident and mitigate environmental damage.

Placards must:

Be visible by the general population from 10 metres in variations of expected weather conditions.
Be fitted to all equipment access points, pressure vessels, purge IBC and land where Ammonia substances are present
Contain the United Nations transportation number (Anhydrous 1005) – (Aqueous 2672)
Contain the nationally accepted Emergency Action Code (2XE) – NCEC (UK)
Contain GHS logos or (Primary Class) Pictograms
Contain Primary Hazard Statements
Contain Secondary Hazard Statements
24-hour Emergency Contact information

Additional information required by AS/NZS 5149.2:2016 can include in an all-in-one sign to reduce clutter and provide vital plant information to approaching emergency response vehicles:

Installation company and logo
Year of Installation
Ammonia inventory
ASHRAE Safety Classification
Lubricant inventory
Design or Maximum working Pressure
Mandatory PPE

Ammonia gap analysis audits are a thorough, organised, and systematic approach for identifying, evaluating, and controlling your unique Ammonia Refrigeration plant hazards.

PCBU should program and perform regular gap analysis audits within their Safety Management Systems to meet the ongoing obligations under the Health and Safety at Work framework.

So far as “reasonably practicable”, pressure equipment is to be; operated safely within design parameters and maintained in a safe condition under the primary duties cited in the Pressure Equipment, Cranes and Passenger Ropeways Regulations (PECPR) Regulation 10 (d) and the HSWA Act 2015 section 36.

Since we are not servicing your system or providing you with capital plant solutions, we can offer an unbiased approach to ensure PCBU are made aware of all of the risks to their people and process.

Our audits are not only assessed against compliance criteria of joint Australian, New Zealand Standard 5149.1-4:2016 but also include the evaluation of regulatory requirements and references to International Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practice (RAGAGEP) where the local standard is deficient or lacking clarity.

The semi-quantitative and qualitative report format includes weighted criteria guidelines to ensure objectivity and improve consistency, allowing PCBU and Health and Safety professionals to prioritise the mitigation of their unique risk profile.
