I bet you didn’t know there is a New Zealand Sunshine Cup that goes to the city with the highest sunshine hours as recorded by NIWA each year.

The lovely Whakatane Mayor Judy Turner had hoped to hand it over in person earlier in the year but Covid disruptions meant we never caught up so she took the time to have ‘New Plymouth 2021’ engraved on the cup before sending it through last month.

While it may not feel like it today, New Plymouth is still leading the race for sunshine hours 2022 and it would be good to keep it in our trophy cabinet for a while.
